Or even if you had to hire the job done. Cheaper to replace the gear box. Even if labor was $1k.

most of the time it wasn't a matter of hitting anything, they just weren't made correctly and just broke, back when I was still at a Deere dealer we had several thet just "fell off" as they were mowing, blades were perfect and showed no strike marks. It's really a shame, because it's one of the nicest build HD mowers out there were it not for this issue.

It sounds like you (and others here) have some inside info on this. Where do you see the weakness? And how would you go about fixing it. Obviously it's fixable; other mowers don't do this.

I wasn’t in the service department, but I always felt like it was a issue with the steel in the shaft, not sure if it was too hard and broke, or if it was too weak, saddest thing is that the way Deere build the deck, it’s almost impossible to mount another style of box unless you have a machine shop! I was so impressed with them when they came out, just didn’t have the money to buy one. We had more than one person walk out, never to return if it wasn’t warranted. I know our owner put new boxes out of his pockets for a couple of really good customers, but as more happened, he had to stop. I have been gone for years, but am assuming they now source a different box.
