Anybody who "carries" with the thought of self protection is fooling themselves. It probably would work on a coyote. Any self respecting cougar/mountain lion will be "on you" long before a weapon could do you any good. A cougar will either pass you by or stalk you. They have a lot more experience stalking game than most have defending themselves.
However - if it makes you feel better - go ahead and carry. If the cougar really wants you - it will make little or no difference if you are carrying. Especially at night.
