Rounded off drain plug

This was posted by the OP long ago, not sure which post exactly. It's a large file size, so I won't repost it, just the link. Look at this picture closely, then tell us how you'll get the punch and bit lined up square enough to do what you suggest.

Thank you for keeping track. By employing such discipline we would have been able to limit the thread to 30 or 40 posts having real pertinence.

I actually had this kind of fun before- but it was the bronze drain plug in the bilge of a boat. I had surgery and had not removed the plug like I normally did. By the time I got to it, I had to break the ice and reach down into a foot of water below that to a plug that was out of sight and had to be removed by feel. That is when I really appreciated my brilliant decision in the spring to screw the plug in one more time with the rounded off head. "I'll worry about it later."
Finding something by feel doesn't work too well when you can't feel your hands at all.

I personally do not like fluid extractors for the simple reason that it leaves a layer of sludge in the bottom of the crank case.
Removing the plug at the lowest point allows one to remove almost all sludge.

It is absolutely preferable to drain rather than extract- unfortuantely, it can't be done with a lot of inboard boats short of pulling the engine.

A lot of marine engines have riser hoses that are plugged and vertical when running but can be bent down and opened to drain into a bilge or connected to a pump etc...some land machines use the same type of drain...

Didn't he extract the oil and do the change long ago? The point in getting the plug out is to flush the engine of any sludge or contaminates that may be lurking in the pan.

Tranny drain plug.

I ordered this set of square female/male sockets tonight. The bleeder plug in the center on the 1950's in-ground single post car lift is a 7/16" square male. It is recessed about 8" and the square head is still square and I want to keep it that way. A crows foot may have worked but I do not want to risk it since It may not have been out in many years. I liked this set because it comes with a storage box to make it easier to keep the set together is a drawer of seldom used special tools. There are cheaper options but without the right tool a 30 second job can become long by days, weeks, months. This thread has been thought provoking.

They did not show up on Wed as promised. Finally last night I checked on my order. They did not read my mind. I would not have put them in my basket if I did not want them they should know.

Well sure enough they were setting in my basket last night when I drilled down on why they did not show up. So I checked out and they are to be here next Wed.

Getting square headed plugs out can be more trouble than it is worth perhaps.

I will check back in around 2000 to see if that plug is out yet!

I doubt it...

By now, the plug has rusted to nothing and has fallen out. That's what happens when the paint gets scuffed.

Excellent! I believe this method has not been suggested to date...

Step 1) Remove by Natural Causes'.

We are progressing nicely on this process.
