Rounded off drain plug

Penetrating oil doesn't work well on pipe threads.

Pipe threads seal air, and solvents such as acetone., And gases such as helium and hydrogen. On a molecular level it don't get much smaller. Penetrating oil isn't magic.

Best things to do for pipe, is heat the PLUG, and apply was and watch it wick in.

But as said....stuck really isn't the problem. Its probably just torqued to a nominal level. Gripping the plug to apply that torque is the issue, and penetrating oil is not the answer

I don't think anyone KNOWS what the problem IS. It most certainly IS stuck. If it weren't then it would have been removed: stuck means that something is resisting extraction energies.

I'll agree that penetrating fluid isn't THE "answer," but I don't think it's necessarily a waste to apply it in conjunction with other modes of attack.

..... Thank God this is a transmission drain so we won't get into much of a debate about oil.

TSC travellers/cam2 promax/wally supertech and GO!:D

Weather lately hasn't been cooperative to making me feel up to doing anything. Alternated rain and snow 4 times in an hour yesterday morning haha

Posted it near the beginning, plug was over tightened. Potential issue with the threads themselves but without the plug out, no way to really tell.

I got a pipe plug out.

My 12 inch Knipex Cobra pliers were delivered today, so I tried them on a pipe plug.

They reached right in, locked on the threads and got it out :

Not for another 103 posts.

We might need more than that, have we even discussed what happens at the molecular level during thread galling yet? I am not recalling it. Maybe someone can enlighten us.

I am waiting, with abated breath, for the Rube Goldberg Machine method of removing the rounded off drain plug.

(Difficulty: No [quality] pipe-wrench)

OK, here it goes.
Weld that drain plug to a mass of steel (like to the local rail road tracks) and rotate the tractor.
That should do it!

Got mine today. no chance to try them on any drain plugs though. too dang cold. You gotta wonder how many of these pliers got sold by this thread. Maybe that was the idea all along. :)

Wow, 900! As we approach the 1000 post threshold, Kando needs to get that sucker removed. Once he gets it out we can focus our efforts on replacing the plug. Should he use Teflon tape? Old school pipe dope? New tech thread sealer? Go commando and gamble on the metal sealing things? Speaking of metal, should he use a brass or steel plug? Once that's decided, should it be a standard pipe plug like he's removing, or go with a concave plug? Square, hex, or other drive? We have so much advice to offer once he gets that plug out. Thank God this is a transmission drain so we won't get into much of a debate about oil.

What type of wrench should Kando use ..... to put the new plug in?
