2020 Jeep Gladiator pickup

I read an article that compared the Jeep to the Chevy Colorado, Ford Ranger (new), Toyota and Nissan, and the #1 thing I came away with was the Jeep has a bed 56" wide and the others are all around 44" wide. If you want to haul plywood, sheetrock etc., the Jeep is the one to get.

No, It sounds like the Jeep is only 44.8" between the wheel wells:

Put a board across the wheel wells and put the tailgate in the mid position to haul 4x8 sheets.

One thing that is different than the other trucks...the reach-over into the bed is lower.

Buy a bigger truck if you plan to haul much plywood.

That's what 4x8 trailers are for. :)

It depends on how often you haul it, I guess. For occasional use either a trailer of the above mentioned pickup brackets work. If I was a carpenter I would just get a bigger truck.

I'll keep my 2005 Tacoma until one of the main liners come out with a small or mid sized all electric pickup. An electric pickup, particularly if they put the motors right into the wheel hubs, could be lowered a bit as it would not have to have the bed above the differential.

Wish I'd kept our 1996 Tacoma. We both liked it. Only drive the 2005 beast when we really need a pickup. Only put about 1k/yr miles on it.

The reachover is one of the main reasons I go for a small pickup. Cannot use the big pickups because I cannot reach into them from the side.

4650 # is hefty. Fuel mileage will be abysmal, probably about 16-18 mpg.

The Jeep will have it's niche in the segment with it's own identity, but, I do think it will have a hefty MSRP.

probably going off topic from OP here
looking around through the years re pickups, i notice generally that most domestic & import pickups today are big & hugely expensive. but ironically, most, as a member previously noted, are mall cruisers. so lots of sheet metal & HP, but with less utility than what pickups were originally designed for.

so why the consumer demand for BIGGER & cushier rides? is it a comment on the current domestic consumer? (aside from very specific uses eg agri/construction, etc)

Four doors, a full sized passenger compartment and 5' bed; it's really just another SUV with an open trunk.

& the bed keeps shrinking along with a 2nd mortgage price tag.

This summer I looked into the Jeep p/u and the dealer said they were still working on it. I looked into a 2019 Dodge Ram Power Wagon. $67,000+ and 17 to 19 mpg. However - for an estimated $6400 more - the Power Wagon may be a diesel with all its increased maintenance requirements but possibly better mpg.

I don't think I could get a loan for that much money. At 76 my estimated life expectancy is shorter that the life of the loan.

Can you imagine this gut wrenching experience - parking your brand new $75,000 pickup in the mall parking lot and worrying about somebody hitting it with a shopping cart.

Or driving down my mile long gravel driveway and getting dust on it or splashing a bit of cow dung up on it.

NO THANKS - I already have enough trouble sleeping at night.

Currently, the only mid-size that will allow a flat 4x8 sheet between the wheel wells is the Honda Ridgeline. (w/tailgate down of course..)

But this new Jeep is a lifestyle truck, not a work truck. A doubt anyone bases their purchase decision on that.

Pre-amble... I've owned 3 jeeps (two XJ's and a CJ5) and now own a F150

I will buy the JT Rubicon in 2022 as long as the stats dont change.
Why do I want that truck....
1st its a jeep (and since 2013 I've regretted not buying a jeep)
2nd it can tow 7000lbs in Rubicon Trim (thats all I ever want to tow)
3rd with the 3.0 diesel it will have 100 more ft-lbs then my f150
4th It has 4 doors, which is what I need
5th It can still bring back 4x8's from home depot... if I need more then that see #2

Is that for the LGBLT (or whatever that is) lifestyle? They have a right to their own truck too, I guess.

Lol!

I want to like current Jeep products, but everyone I know that’s owns current Fiat products is generally unhappy regarding overall quality.

Disclaimer- I do own and like my Ram pickup.

Can't you just see it, perfectly clean, parked in the Suburban Garage next to the Pair of Matching Spyders?

Looks to much like for some kind of wannabe or weekend warrior.

I got the same impression, especially after reading the article the OP linked to. Looks like they're going after the same crowd the tacoma targets...20something guys who call each other "dude", and drive down dirt roads, splashing thru puddles with bicycles or a canoe in the back. Definitely not something you'd actually haul anything with. I wonder if it comes with a Go-Pro mount. :irked:

All well and good I suppose if you're into that sort of thing.

Hate to say it, especially as a long time Mopar guy, but I have the same reservations. My Dakota's getting up in years, not sure right now what I'd replace it with when the time comes. The full size pickups have gotten so huge (and expensive), and other than maybe the Colorado the mid-size trucks don't impress me much. Hopefully, I'll get another 5-6 yr out of the Dakota.

My 2000 Dakota got totaled as I sat stopped at a stop sign. That truck never did me any wrong. It however, was was a shock to me, the day I went to clean the windshield and my elbow caved in the hood!
