Speaking of which.. I found my GrandMothers C. Book.. It has a section for making TOAST.. it starts by making the bread.. no kidding.
& every recipe serves 14.!!! They had a lot of kids back then..
Isnt it strange that "back then" people had 8-10-13 children & managed to "get by"?? & today folks have 1 kid that's a menace to society & have 2 jobs.. & cry poor mouth..

luckily they do offer optional meat in the recipes. You can substitute ground beef for possum and chicken wings for buzzard wings.

Possum is pretty easy to come by; just cruise one of our well traveled streets on a Friday night, and there are usually a lot of them at the side of the road, along with raccoons and the occasional deer. Buzzard wings are harder to come by...and from the testimonials from those that have killed buzzards, it's a good thing that chicken wings can be substituted.

Granny used to say that cougar meat was the best thing to raise boys on. Ground hog is not too bad but you have to run the meat through a grinder - this is how ground chuck is made

I have some of my my Mom's, and both my Grandmothers cookbook collections. It's interesting some of the old recipes, game recipes, kitchen doodads etc. Some are old enough that they talk about how to check wood stove oven temps with your hand, and do not use degrees.

One that stumped me temporarily was when I wanted to try a recipe that called for Oleo. Had to look it up to find it was an early name for margarine.

One that I like was by Southern Cooking by "Mrs S.R. Dull".

I also have a 1962 cookbook from the Roseville Ca Carpenters Union Auxiliary my Grandmother was in. She has 6 recipes in it.

You are a youngster. I remember when you bought "oleo margarine" in a one pound plastic bag; it was white like Crisco. It had a capsule of yellow color that you broke, and kneaded the bag until it was yellow. It was against the law to sell it any other way at the time; the dairy industry didn't want the competition.

The original Hooters restaurant is located at the western end of a causeway across the north end of Tampa Bay...before they hit the big time there was a running joke about them collecting seagull wings off the causeway...

:laughing:Yep, we had a milk cow and made our own butter at the time, but my grandmother started buying that "oleo margarine" and I thought it was fun to knead that bag and watch the color change.
