In Florida you self-define yourself as a farmer or forester by filling out a short tax exemption form, which each equipment dealer keeps on file. I have a second form on file at TSC where, on rare occasions, I purchase implements.

In thirteen years my dealer has never had a government agent ask to review sales tax exemptions. Dealer destroys forms after three years.

That would be much better than ours in NC. Here its pretty much you have to demonstrate, thru tax returns, $10k farm income for exemption. Otherwise you can apply for a conditional 3-yr exemption stating you intend to engage in farming operations. If after the 3 year mark is reached and not at the $10k income level, it expires and you can not get another one.

Virtually the same here in South Carolina. Its a self determination of farm use by filing a form with the seller. I don't see any length of term for the dealer to maintain the form but I imagine a tax period of 3 years would be enough. This form does not get transmitted anywhere. It simply stays on file.

How does one figure out how heavy of a tractor they will need?

Easiest way is by first buying the wrong tractor. (sorry, just 25 grand worth of levity there)

I'll give you my story. First tractor I bought were 2 actually. A JD 750 and 950. When things got tight in the logging outfit I used to work for, I sold the 950 after a couple years. The 750 was a 3000 lb tractor. I do two main things: plow snow and skid logs. I also put in a 160'x80' riding ring with the 750 with some fill as much as 5' deep. 5 years ago I bought a 4000 lb tractor and it made me realize that for 28 yrs, I had the wrong tractor. the 4000 lb tractor cut my tasks almost in half. Where it took 3 days to skid in the required amount of firewood stems, the larger tractor did it in 12 hrs. Snow plowing time is reduced in half.
