That figure is closer to 60% I believe. In 2012, 64% of all gun-related deaths in the U.S. were suicides. Many other countries do not list suicides in their gun death data, which skews the results of comparisons.

Your "closer to 60%" is far more accurate. Per CDC WISQARS data base, as of 8/12/2017, average firearm deaths, for the period 1999-2015: Suicide 58.7%, Homicide 37.2%, Unintentional 2%, Legal Intervention 1.2%, Undetermined 0.8% (that leaves 0.1% unexplained, or just "rounding" error. The total, all firearm deaths, for that 17 year period, 533,879. The increase during that period 20%, fluctuating by year, but an over all increase.

Compare these figures to Highway/Vehicle deaths for a similar period (2000-2016). Per NHTSA, 717,492. Ave/yr. 42,205. Over 25% more deaths than by firearms. The "Highway Deaths" Increase/Decrease over that 17 yr. period, -11%. However the number of deaths decreased in 12 of those years, and increased in 5 of those years, and more stringent seat belt and airbag requirements were instituted, as well as the effect of anti-lock brakes and other safety features.

Also, any of these statistics should be compared to population figures of the U.S. (U.S. Census Data, as of 1/1/2017). Year 2000, U.S. Population 282.16 million. Year 20116, U.S. Population 323.41 million - A growth of, approx. 14.6% in that 17 year period.

So, for two similar 17 year periods, the "gun" deaths increased by 20%, while the vehicle fatalities decreased by 11%, yet the population grew at 14.6%. Safer vehicles, perhaps safer driving and more stringent highway law enforcement, significantly lowered the vehicle deaths. even with an increasing population. Accounting for population increase, the "gun" deaths, increased, but per capita, less than the 20% raw data suggests. Figures only provide a part of "the story", and are only useful when other contributing factors are taken into account. Just my 2 cents.

They are just another of the liberal forces at work eroding our freedoms. FBI investigates what they want for the effects and outcomes they seek.

Same reason the shooting in Japan isn't being reported more. Gun laws there are among the most restrictive on earth, yet they just had a shooting. It goes against their goal of tightening restrictions here, so they do not report it.

Well, it looks like the head of the organization could fill out the 4473 pass NICS and take possession, then give the rifle to the winner as long as they don't know he is a prohibited person, but I sure wouldn't do that. Around here there is always a FFL licensee to make the transfer, and that seems like a much safer (for the organization) thing to do. Also there is the line about rising to the level of "doing business". What ever that means.

This whole straw man provision of the law is a very gray area.

There is no way in HE double toothpicks if I was running a raffle would I take possession of that serial numbered rifle only to give it to ANYONE who won it. Just way too many things that could go wrong not only for you, but for your organization.

I was about an hour south of my home when I filled out a ticket for a volunteer fire departments fundraiser. 2 months later, got a call, found out I had won a nice .270 The guy apologized but told me the FFL where the rifle was at was no where near him. Turns out the FFL was a shop where the owner and wife knew me pretty well LOL I had to go to the FFL and fill out the paperwork for the rifle.

It gets even worse. Tonight we learn that 3 more Broward county deputies arrived and waited outside with the first one. They waited until another agency the Coral Gables police arrived. I have heard in all they waited 30 minutes. Time will tell. OK the first guy was a coward, so what were the other 3? The sheriff says the first guy should have went in and killed the threat. So I guess it wasn't policy. And I thought we all learned better after Columbine, when the waited outside forever.

Latest news is that the incident commander (a Captain) ordered the perimeter secured and wait. And this was NOT SOP, and since Columbine has NOT been the standard best practice. Our training was go to the gunfire and put down the shooter, even with one man. Because with the size of our town and the few officers working it could be 5-10 minutes before backup arrived. I would've gone with the 870 and all the buckshot I could get in my pockets and Glock as my backup.

Yep. Not many things on two or 4 legs can stand up to a load of buckshot from a 12 gauge at a few yards.

Just engaging the shooter, even if you miss, means he's not shooting at more kids.

That is a good point. Even if you can keep him pinned down, until more help arrives, you have likely saved many lives.
