I'm not a news junky. What little I've saw highlighted the kid's organizing to push for gun control. Wonder where they got that idea? Wouldn't their efforts be better focused on people control?? Shouldn't they be holding the system and their own families somewhat accountable? This morning I heard the law had been called to this man's house 32 times, might have been 39, doesn't matter after half a dozen. Sad ordeal. Hate to see it get diluted with political debate about gun control.

Also after telling that the law had responded to this ADDRESS so many times, the news guy also said and as many as half of these MAY have involved Nick.

Typical of the mainstream media, cherry picking info to advance their agenda.

Good stuff. I did not know that. There are local gun raffles or prizes here all the time. I'm pretty sure the weapon is simply handed to the winner. I'm certain there is no prerequisite because I've bought tickets by simple exchange of cash for ticket receipt. But then,,,, we are a bunch of redneck rebels here in Missouri.

In the raffles I have seen, there is and FFL in the group or they get one to come and have the 4473 form filled out and the check run. You don't just get the rifle. That would be breaking the law for an organization to do that. The fire dept here often raffles a rifle off . I am not saying it has never happened, but the law is the law.

Well, it looks like the head of the organization could fill out the 4473 pass NICS and take possession, then give the rifle to the winner as long as they don't know he is a prohibited person, but I sure wouldn't do that. Around here there is always a FFL licensee to make the transfer, and that seems like a much safer (for the organization) thing to do. Also there is the line about rising to the level of "doing business". What ever that means.

This whole straw man provision of the law is a very gray area.

I was at a farm auction where there were a few firearms. They were very clear that they'd be handed of to a gun shop nearby and the winners had to go to that shop and do paperwork and background check. I'd expect a raffle to do the same.

That is certainly the safest course. Better to CYA than hand a firearm to someone you don't know even if you could get away with it.

I always carry a handgun when I am out and about on our 60 acres, including when I am on the tractor. I carry either a .357 revolver or a 9mm semiauto pistol. I open carry but in cool or cold weather the handgun might be wholly or partly covered up by a jacket. (I have a concealed carry permit.) Summer before last I had an interesting experience: While I was out in the woods mowing with the tractor, we had a false alarm on our security system in the house. I was unaware of the alarm. I came back to the shed, and I was rinsing off the tractor and mower when a hot-looking unmarked white two-door Dodge car with very tinted windows pulled up in the driveway near the shed about 60-70' from me. I was on the passenger side of the Dodge. I thought the Dodge was an intruder and I started walking pretty quickly toward it. The passenger door window rolled down when I was maybe 40' from the Dodge. I saw through the now open window that the driver was in a law-enforcement uniform. I immediately figured that the officer, who was a deputy sheriff, would feel threatened by my rapid advance, so I raised my hands and said "officer, I have a handgun on my hip but please don't be upset, I am no threat." The deputy said, "I'm not upset. I won't point mine at you if you don't point yours at me." The deputy was responding to the call from the security-alarm-monitoring company about our alarm having gone off. I had missed the calls from the security company. I had a good chat with the deputy and with the second deputy who also drove up soon. They said they were happy to see me carrying, just be careful. My takeaway from this experience: Don't make an aggressive move, such as when I started walking rapidly toward the Dodge car, when you are uncertain about what situation is actually presented to you.
