big bubba;5004581 is Kansas congressional hopeful Tyler Tannahill's giveaway of an AR 15 ( to coincide w/Kansas Republican convention) appropriate or not at this time given the florida school shooting? maybe just yes or no before your explanation. interested in your response best regards to you all.....[/QUOTE said:
Yes...it's as appropriate as any other giveaway. The sooner people realize the gun is not the problem, the better.

Yes.

The appropriateness of it has nothing to do with current affairs.

Sadly our society is going to miss the problem in this country in regards to that shooting. We do not need more gun laws. We as a society need to accept responsibility individually for these events and prevent them rather than try to legislate them away.

If such things bother you, there is also news of a group of 3rd graders selling raffle tickets for an AR15 to support the travels of their baseball team. It was planned long in advance of the recent school shooting.

Do I have a problem with it? No. Do I think some might view it as insensitive? Possibly. Would I have a problem if they canceled their raffles/giveaways? No. Do I think they should cancel? The kids, no. The wannabe-congressman should have had better sense than to alienate part of the voters in the first place; now he either gets viewed as insensitive or spineless depending on how he proceeds.

I do dislike that raffles and giveaways are considered private party transactions and in many locations require no background check for the recipient of the firearm.

yes was aware of this, just wanted to keep the question simple, and that it is from a potential congressman. nothing else
thanks for your reply :)

Well, sticking with the congressman-wannabe, I personally would have thought he was a moron with or without the giveaway. :)

Yes, but this is a touchy one. I think if I were involved, I would also make a gesture that also clearly supports the kids in Florida in some way. Regardless of position, I believe one should be sensitive to such things (current events).

I'm not a news junky. What little I've saw highlighted the kid's organizing to push for gun control. Wonder where they got that idea? Wouldn't their efforts be better focused on people control?? Shouldn't they be holding the system and their own families somewhat accountable? This morning I heard the law had been called to this man's house 32 times, might have been 39, doesn't matter after half a dozen. Sad ordeal. Hate to see it get diluted with political debate about gun control.

A member on here has as his signature a quote from Ronald Reagan that applies here. Maybe he'll show up so I can borrow it. :)

Found it. The member's name is gsganzer. Hoping he doesn't mind me applying his "signature" quote to this discussion. It certainly applies. Here it is.

"We must reject the idea that every time a law's broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker. It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions." - Ronald Reagan

balderdash!, no one has been held accountable for their actions for decades now.
