When I am viewing various threads some pictures show as "Photo Bucket" with no real picture just a note saying I need to update some permissions to see them. I don't see anywhere in my profile to deal with this and I know I am missing some great photos. Help?

You don't need to update anything... this is all "Photo Bucket"s doing.

The originator(s) of the photos had them hosted via that company which was a 'free service'. It isn't anymore and "Photo Bucket" is basically holding those photos as ransom unless the originator(s) pay a fee.

Photos uploaded from your own system to TBN are unaffected.

Thanks Wagtail. I wondered what that symbol/notification was on some of these threads.

I have 100 +- photos on my computer. I thought that was a lot. I guess many folks have a lot more if they are needing storage beyond their computer hard drive.

The advantage to Photo Bucket, and other photo hosting sites like Snap Chat, Flicker, and other is that the photos are "in the cloud" and available on any internet connected device. Your phone, tablet, your friends computer etc. Of course "the cloud" is just somebody elses computer, but you know what I mean.

If you're visiting someone and say "I've got this great photo of Yosemite Falls on my PC at home and wish I could show it to you", you can do so.

It also allows you to post photos to site where you're not allowed to upload directly, you just post the link from your photo sharing site.

There was a time when Photobucket was the easiest way to post pics here on TBN for me. I used them a LOT. I refuse to pay ransom. So I've got some threads on here with pics that you can't see.

It was never an issue of storage space outside my computer. I recently purchased a 2TB external storage device. I've got .23TBs of pics/videos. Literally thousands.

I had a lot of images on photobucket and used it over uploading to TBN so I had control of my images. I don't like the fact that TBN will not allow editing after 24 hours.

That said I have accounts on other forums where you can edit your posts indefinitely and I have replaced some of the photobucket hosted images on those.

The photobucket change made me angry to the point I was determined to cancel my account and get my images deleted. It was no easy task with the pop ups they inflicted but I finally was able to click on a customer support link that allowed me to delete my account there. I have verified they deleted all my images.

I saw a simple hack somewhere that bypassed the photobucket code and made the images viewable again but I don't remember what it was.

There is at least one member on here that still has a photobucket link in his signature. I don't understand why they don't edit that out. I used to hove one in mine and decided to remove it before the melt down just because every topic I participated in caused my signature image to have to load.

I used Photobucket for years but unfortunately they decided to follow the business model of many other popular sites: start out for free --> lie to users that it will always be free --> after they signup enough suckers change policy and charge them.

I have never used the service...I've always had my own web servers...
From what I understand...they have implemented a fee based service for the ability to hot link images on their servers on third party sites...
FWIW...It takes bandwidth anytime an image is viewed on someones browser...when you have a lot of images being linked to on high traffic sites sites like TBN...and on really heavy traffic sites like social media...that bandwidth demand adds up to costing $$$...

Then don't say there is.

Naive end users tend to not bother reading the fine print along with the typical boilerplate nomenclature in the 'Terms of Service' and User Agreements...and or have someone explain to them what it means when they say something like: "changes can be made at any time without notice etc.,etc..."

Ransom??? I've got three photo bucket accounts, when they were making the "change" I was notified and had the opportunity to do as I wished with my picts...

I did NOTHING, why? because I had brains enough to BACK UP ALL OF THE PICTS I PUT ON PHOTO BUCKET!!

IF you didn't do the same, that's ON YOU!

Why should anyone be crying because a company wants to be paid for a service they are offering?? Do YOU work for FREE?

You should be THANKING them for all the FREE years you got to use them!!

Yep. But it's still misleading. And it's intentional. That's enough for me. If Photobucket contacted me today and said I'm back in, I'd not post another pic to their site. Remember, I'm the Neanderthal. :)

I would never give a company my pics. I always retain them.

I have no beef with Photobucket. I simply don't use them. :)

FWIW...without reading every word of any terms of service and or end user agreement(s)...It is possible that by just creating an account and uploading an image...the end user "could" be surrendering legal rights to said image...
I have never used an image hosting service so I have never studied any of their legalese...
Most digital media photo contests word their agreements that way...!

BTW...If anyone is familiar with using an FTP client...the best option for sharing anything on the Internet is from a remote server...for as little as $4-$5 /month you can get complete web hosting with unlimited data ...which includes unlimited use of an e-mail server...use a domain if you have one or just an IP address...upload all your data using FTP to the server then just link your images and videos to directories on the server...send or post the links to anyone...

Thanks for the response Wagtail. I understand a litttle about business models but it's seems a little like the bait and switch to offer hosting for free and then change it. I will just miss seeing all the photos.

I can't believe some one would cry over "being told" what was going to happen, then they do NOTHING and whine about it later!

Talk about an entitled mentality!! AMAZING! lol

Since those agreements are written by lawyers I'd have to hire a lawyer to understand what they are saying or better yet what they are hiding.

I've never used a service such as Photo Bucket. The reason - I have a Seagate 5 TB backup external storage device that all my pics are on. I've never tried to access my computer via my cell phone or anybody else's cell phone. Definitely accessed my computer via other folks computer and downloaded pics and documents - no trouble there.

It can't be that much easier to access documents/pics when stored on somebody else's device - Photo Bucket - than accessing them on your own device.

It reminds me of storing my tools in somebody else's storage shed because their shed is a little closer to my work site. As opposed to having a mobile storage shed and bringing it to the work site every day. What if somebody breaks into their shed and steals my tools or a large tree falls across their long driveway and I can't get to their shed or they turn out to be a bad egg and sell my tools.

I use to be a member of a forestry site, they have a lot of saw millers ect. there, in fact the owner of the site came to another site and asked me to come to his site and also post there...

I would post picts there, just like I do here. It was weird, I'd post a pict., it would show for a day or so, then not show after that. I would go back and relink to the pict. and it would show again, but only for a short time. Some friends emailed me and told me THEY were having the same problem.

I started looking at the actual link that I posted and noticed that a couple letters would change in the link, so with further investigation I figured out some one was changing them after I posted them!

Finally, the OWNER of the site, told me I couldn't post picts from a pict. hosting site, I had to load the picts. directly to his site, AND then I learned that once THAT was done, HE became the owner of the picts!!

UNACCEPTABLE, and that ended me going to that site! They can stick THAT rule where the sun don't shine!
