Today is my 19th annual labor day picnic i host for the church. Numbers have been down the last few yrs. Used to have over 100, now get around 40.

Got tables set up in garage. Still gotta mow once it dries up some more.

Beautiful morning, 65°

Wed i find out if my work project gets cut. We were given a heads up last week.

Good afternoon. A bit late checking in today as I have spent the morning helping to clean out the bullet traps at the shooting club. Not exactly a clean job seperating crumb rubber from lead, although at least it yielded plenty of the heavy stuff to weigh in and help keep membership costs down.

Roy, you certainly had some good views from up on Mount Equinox.

Our tomatoes did awful this years three good ones that's it
That's a pity Bups, I thought growing tomatoes would be very reliable in your climate. This year has been a very poor summer for us, not very warm and a lot of cloud cover, yet surprisingly the outdoor tomatoes ripened well and tasted sweeter than I can ever remember.

The weather yesterday was the same as the day before. So the forecasters got it right. See if they do it again today.

Not much going on today. Seems like there are more people this weekend then I've seen in the past few years for the holiday. The road will be busy with everyone coming out of the hills today. Then back to peace and quiet tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a nice day.
CWB.

75F and sunny @ 11:30, headed up to a high in the mid-80's. Thunderstorms due in later this evening (20:00 - 21:00), with the possibility of some being severe.

I think the push broom I had been using with the soil screen is in at the commercial property, so I'm going to head to HFT here in a little bit and use my this-day-only 25% off coupon to pick up another one. Probably grab a couple of gallons of diesel while I'm at it.

Then back to screening compost.

Have to do a little grading on the topsoil I've placed on the slope on the north side of the polebarn before the rain gets here, to form a catch at the bottom so that the soil doesn't wash away.

Have one downspout to repair as well.

RS, can you post some recent pics of your compost screens? I'm thinking of doing something similar here. Looking to steal any good ideas.
Rick,

Sure be happy to ... will do it some time later today.

In the meantime, here's a little data about their make up:

I have three screens, and of the screens, one gets used far more than the other two.

All of the screens are 6' wide (my bucket is 5' wide) and roughly 5' deep and built out of 2 x 4's which screwed together with 3 1/4" drywall screws.

The screen that get used the most uses 1" hardware cloth, which was stapled to the 2 x 4's with a 1/4" crown stapler. . I was really surprised at how well it works, as it clears a lot of stuff less then 1".

I have one screen I made using a cut down cattle panel from Tractor Supply to clear larger rocks. It's seen some use ... but nowhere as much as the screen above. Secured to the frame using staples for electrical wire (romex ?)

The third screen is made out of 1/4" hardware cloth and was built to screen gravel. Secured to the frame with 1/4" crown staples. I have never used this one ... but plan to shortly.

I varied the number of 2 x 4's in the frames according to how much weight I figured the screens would support: the 1/4" screen has the most supports, the cattle panel screen the least.

The frame that holds the screens I believe is set at a 45 degree angle ... which is plenty enough to to get material screen as it rolls down.

The only issue - which is actually pretty insignificant - is that the 1" screen will catch and fill with grass and weeds eventually, inhibiting the dirt from going through. A quick hit with a pushbroom resolves that.

Happy a Labor Day (and end of Summer)
67°F and no rain.

No big plans. Likely husk some more Macnuts. A few friends coming over this afternoon. Wife making chicken Parmesan. Our Cottage residents are back from their mainland trip so some catching up to do.

Be safe
Have a great day
