Tractor
Massey Ferguson 165
I recently bought my first tractor (other than lawn tractors) - a Massey Ferguson 165. I purchased it for $4500 Cdn. ($3375 US) and it came with a brush mower. I starts and runs really well. I've changed all the fluids and filters and of course there are things that need to be done. The brakes work but one side needs service. The lights need some work and there is a leak in the power steering. It could use a paint job but other than the above nothing major needs to be done.

I started reading posts on the owning and operating forum and have gone back 10 years. I've learned so much about my tractor and I feel like I've gone to Massey Ferguson college and completed the first course. Thank you to the long time contributors who have helped out so many of us newbies. Your wisdom and knowledge are invaluable to those of us who would otherwise stumble around and be frustrated trying to figure out what is wrong with our tractors and how to fix them.

And yes I did purchase the manuals from AGCO and found them invaluable too.

I have a die cast model of that exact tractor made by Corgi toys out of England. It even has the loader. I've had it since I was a child. Seeing your picture reminded me of it immediately. Mine was well played with and does not look as good as the one in the picture.

Congrats on your tractor purchase and you started off correctly with a picture. :D
Also doing all that research instead of just asking questions like most people would do shows just how intelligent you are.

I think asking questions is a sign of intelligence too.

Yes George, as I used to tell my students, the only stupid question is the one not asked.

What I was stating, apparently not very well, was the wisdom of an older person taking the time to do some research to find answers instead of always asking simple questions as most of the younger generations seem to do.

Yep, as they say, there are no stupid questions but there are a lot of inquisitive idiots.;)

(I'm also a USAF guy but only about 9 years in).

Thank you for your service. When were you in and where?

Eglin, AFB, Charleston AFB, short deployment to Germany and Hungary. I enjoyed my time in the USAF but my service was fairly mundane and not associated with any risk or danger. Thank you for your many years of dedication.

Looks like a great deal.

I had a 175 for a while. Mine had the front seal on the power steering pump leaking. It would over fill and thin out the engine oil. $15 seal fro MF and all was good.

Very nice tractor!

I will say that tractors without ROPS scare me. I wonder if a retrofit kit would be available for that tractor?

I tipped my larger tractor on its side once some years ago. Kubota B2910, maybe about the size of yours. Very slow event while using a box blade. Almost a non event but had the ROPS not been there to stop the roll things might have turned out differently.

Just a thought.

Service is service and the extra requirements are still there.

While I was stationed in Sumter at Shaw AFB, I spent 4 months TDY to Charleston in 1974 while my oldest daughter had a special operation at the USC Medical Center Hospital when she was only 4. It was a new type of operation that they were developing then and she was patient number 1. At the time, I was naive enough that I was shocked when I got a bill for over $27,000 that the Air Force would not cover. Lucky for me, our head surgeon had served in the Navy and he talked most of the other doctors into waving their fee and got the bill reduced to around $9,000 which I paid off in payments over many years.
