Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

Thanks most of that is obvious I'll definitely check out the rotor for sure and after reading about the early bearing failure from not greasing regular it makes me nervous I don't want something that needs repair right off. He's only 200$ less than new not including tax but said it's less than a year old with little use, supposedly his elderly father bought it and decided he likes a bush hog cut better.

Yep the one I ordered should come in this week so I was that close to paying new price and I still might depending on how this one looks.

No implement is worth 90% of MSRP or original price after it leaves the showroom much less after a season of use. If I were in your shoes I'd offer 75% at most or pay the extra $500 to AgriSupply just for the peace of mind and warranty.

Well that fell through, I typically don't haggle over the phone but for some reason I had a funny feeling about this guy and asked if he had any room to come down and he was stuck solid at 1700$ so I thanked him and went on about my business. The new one should be in by the weekend and I'll go check it out I'm still somewhat up in the air about it as the 8' Caroni RFM is tempting me right on.

Doesn't the 8' RFM take about 25% more PTO HP than you have??

Don't let your eyes be bigger than your HP!!

I am in the same boat,, I am kinda stuck at looking at 7' RFM's,,,,

I wouldn't think that someone considering a Caroni TM1900 flail would also consider a RFM. I think of the Caroni as a field mower that does a better cut than a bush hog but not a suburban lawn cut like a RFM. Finish flails are set up with different types of rotors as I'm sure you know by reading all fifty thousand posts in this thread. I suppose a well kept pasture could be cut with a RFM though so maybe there is room for overlap.

What's recommended? 8foot times 5hp per foot is 40hp and I'm right at that considering I'm a gear drive and not HST.

No offence meant but I'm just worried your alittle biased about it all, really concerned being absolutely nobody I know has ever had or seen a flail in operation and I don't want to drop 2k on something I'm going to regret. I do want to mow stuff around the house that can be seen from my recliner so maybe the flail isn't for me it's just hard to say not having ever seen one operate in person. I'm not picky about my lawn however as I drive the truck and tractor on it all the time nearly every day so it's not like I'm talking about a manicured lawn I've never once sprayed it or any such but I will throw a little 34-0-0 on it when I feel like mowing every two days for a month or so.

The Caroni flail can give a very nice cut. It isn't like what you'd get with a set of freshly sharpened blades on a good RFM but it is WAY better than what a bush hog can do. I would compare it to what a golf course fairway looks like. Not the rough and not the green. I use my flail to mow around the house and am perfectly happy with the cut but I have absolutely zero pretense of maintaining a ChemLawn perfect yard. Indeed, I cannot tell where the flail section ends and where the Craftsman riding mower section starts as I use the smaller mower right up close to the house and bushes etc. The trick to getting a finish cut with the Caroni is simply to go slow. The mower will cut thigh high field grass quickly but will look a little uneven if you cut fast. If you want the end result to look better than a pasture, you just need to slow down.

Photos below are all from cutting in a field, not a lawn. And, some of it is really low brush or very lush tall grass. I was not going slow.

Those pics look great to me I'd be completely satisfied with that finish and that's basically the plan I have in mind for my property, mow the big open areas with the flail and the rest with my little 42" cut Toro zero turn.

My flail does pretty much the same.

ALL of my neighbors use 5&6 foot rotary mowers,,, and,,,
they ALL comment about my lack of windrows, and ALWAYS question how to eliminate them..
no one else has popped for a flail,,, yet,,,

One guy switched to using a RFM on a bunch of acres of pasture,, because he had it,,,
BOY, does he go S L O W !!!

One other way to get a "finish" cut with a flail when cutting a knee high field is simply to cut it quickly in one direction and then cross cut at 90 degree angle with the same speed. It basically just double cuts but also mulches better. I don't do that because I don't give a rat's arse about lawn like appearance in the fields that I cut once or twice a season but I have noticed when I recut at 90 degrees that the "hay" gets mulched pretty good.
