I understand and hope you get your asking price. Reality us unless it's nearly brand new that's a tough task.

No way most people will buy used when new can be had for a few dollars more.

Look at a two year old vehicle. It's worth about 60% of new. Same goes with a camper, boat, ect, ect.
I can get the tractor on the back near the tail don't know how much tounge weight is there that why I need a bigger trailer to even things out.

So, what's the $$$$ price of a new one that fits your needs?
How much $$$$ will the "old" trailer (which looks to be in excellent cond) sell for?
There may be taxes, delivery charges, these are numbers too.

What is that $$$ difference?

And costs without numbers include; "craigslist effort", no-shows, no-sells too. It does take time and can be significant. Unless you weren't doin' nothin anyway. Prob NOT the case.

That is the impetus for modification. Plus your tolerance and ability to carry out a quality mod. Also painting. If your 16ft trailer has 5200lb axles thats good, and I like that forged hitch. But what are the numbers?

If I get a new trailer say 14k that's 3750 and that for a 20' now if I drive 2 hours west to where I bought this their price is a few dollars more. I am not in a rush to get this going now I wanna get the trailer sold first on CL and that might take time.

See that you are WI I would sell your current trailer and take a 2 day trip to MO and buy a new one likely for much less.

I have sold several things on CL. I have found that including a statement such as "cash only- no checks, no trades, no payment plans- the first person to hand me the cash is the person who gets it. This ad will be removed within 5 minutes of the item being sold- so if you are reading this- the item is still available :) " in the ad will help avoid lots of (but not all) scams. Good luck!

I spoked to the man at the trailer place he told me it would be better if you sold it because what I would give you would be a lot less then selling it.

if he doesnt own a welder now, he presumably doesnt have the skills needed to make structural welds with a 110v mig. dont get me wrong, i like my hobart 140, but it is not the tool for stretching a car trailer. my 300 dollar Snap on YA212a would be fine in the hands of someone who had some practice and skill.

Tell me if this would work.

A welded butt joint is not as strong as a single piece of channel. Never will be. Never could be. Could it work for it's intended purpose - maybe.

Please don't hack up that nice trailer. Sell it and buy a properly built trailer. I know you are trying to save money, but the money you save is only in the short term.

If your trailer is worth 2 grand now, this modification will - IMO - make it worth 1000 or less. So, by investing 500 and a bunch of time, you will cost yourself 1500 in total equity.

If you sell this one for 2 grand and buy a new one for 3500, you've still cost yourself 1500, BUT you will have an asset worth nearly that much for a period of time. So you will have 3 grand in equity by spending the same amount.

I think you believe that you will be throwing money away by selling and re-buying. I believe that you will throwing money away by de-valuing the asset you have.

As a sort-of similar example (trailer related):

My trailer is at the tire shop right now getting four new radial tires to the tune of 500 dollars. The current tires are less than two years old with plenty of tread. One of the tires suffered a bit of tread separation and it makes me not trust the others with a heavy load. So - did I waste 500 or did I save thousands by NOT experiencing a blowout at speed that takes out my trailer fender, damages the load, crashes my vehicle, or - worst possible scenario - injures me or my family?

I believe in spending money to do things properly and safely. I believe that you are being penny wise and pound foolish. Not trying to personally insult you at all. I just really want you to think about safety and also to think about what really preserves your money.

Good luck in your planning and decision. I just re-read this to make sure I did not come across the wrong way. The money is your to do with as you wish. As a fellow road user, I ask that you err always on the side of safety. My wife and two little boys could be in the vehicle beside your trailer when something goes wrong with your modification.

Well my goal is to sell the trailer I looked in other states a few hundred nothing to get excited about!!.

Sure, its done all the time. Steel is good for that (if the welds are good). Can be stronger than orig. with doublers welded on the backside. I'd put a doubler on the top flange too. If you can't put a doubler do the cut at 45* so the weld is longer at an angle. 3/16 is nice material to weld.

Agreed if a few hundred $$ this job will cost more than that in time, and restoring axle position adds time too.

I also planed to put a channel under the welded piece like they under it now. I wanted to do it this way not put a smaller piece of channel inside. Beside 1" of weld of say 7018 is 70k just think what 10 welds would give you 5 on each side.
