Yeah, that looks like way too new and nice of a trailer to be adding on to. Even if you were a pro with all of the equipment in the world at your disposal it will still likely be obvious that you hacked it up and put it back together. Since it is newer and in nice shape, what I'd do first is get a price from a local dealer to trade for what you want - Not saying you should do that, but at least see what the difference is, and then start subtracting out the materials you need to buy to re-do yours. You may find that it's just not worth it to start cutting and welding. I'm pretty well equipped and capable, and I wouldn't cut into a nice trailer like that. My 20 year old homemade one - well, that's another story.

This is what I will do.first when a new radiator is in my truck then I will load up the tractor and drive to the landfill and use their scale to weigh the tractor then the trailer if it's less then or 8,200lbs then I'll keep the trailer if it's over say 8700lbs then I might have to go up in trailer weight.

While I tend to agree it would be best to sell it and buy another one a competent welder could extend the trailer and move the axles in a couple days. Do you have more money or more time? I moved axles on one of my trailers and relocated the fenders. It would be hard to tell it is not factory it turned out nice. Extending it wouldn't be super hard either I would just cut it right where the dovetail starts, add a straight section, and reattach the dove. Certainly doable but when you figure in your time and the materials it would probably be better to trade. I like welding projects though and often tend to do crap like this even though it doesn't make a ton of sense when you sit down and analyze it.

I have it posted at 2600 cash.

Hi, Jack.

Not sure if you stated. Is this a 7k trailer or a 10k? If a 7k, you might get 1800 (in my area, at least). A 10k may get you 2200-2500 here. Last year I bought a 20-foot long 10K factory built trailer new for 3 grand cash. Very well built and has covered probably 10k miles since then with no issues.

I would not hack up a great looking trailer like that. De-values it in my opinion. I have had owner modified trailers in the past - NEVER EVER again. I think others would feel the same. Good luck and keep us posted.

I think your price is high. I just sold my 2003 18' 7K car hauler with a winch, tongue tool box, 2 year old tires, spare with jack and lug wrench, perfect paint, brakes on one axle, barn keep since day one for $1350. I paid $1280 for it new in 2003 factory direct.

A new 5 tons 16' trailer like you have can be bought brand new here for $2500 every day of the week.

I'm thinking your trailer is worth $1750 unless something strange is going on where you live.

I paid 3200 that includes state tax. I have to try and get something back I just can't give it away

His price is probably higher due to where he lives. Same here in the NE, new trailers are 1K to 1.5K more than any of the new prices mentioned in the other posts.
A USED 5 ton trailer in good shape like Chris mentioned would sell for 2-2.5K here and you would be lucky to find a used 7K for less than $1500.
There are very few trailer mfg. in the NE so dealers add shipping to the price and to be competitive the mfg. that do build trailers have higher wholesale prices to dealers. At least that's what I've found. There is a big jump in price once you go above 7K, and longer than 18', and another bigger jump to get a tilt bed.

One reason I drive about 2 hours out there is because of the coupler when it's on the ball it's tight I never seen one like it before.

/ Adding onto a trailer lenth #32
Its a round tongue coupler. Has a sliding collar to lock it. I usually see them on horse trailers. I think they are rated up to 12,500 lbs. Don't usually see them on equipment / utility trailers.

Chris

Prices for these trailers must vary a lot by region. The trailer you describe for 1350 would have brought 1800 down here in SC and be gone in one day. I think a nearly new trailer for 500 to 700 dollars cheaper than the same trailer brand new should bring a buyer. If that's where Jack stands on price, I think he should wait it out for a couple of weeks. Unless the trailer is older and the tires are dry cracked or something... different story, then.

/ Adding onto a trailer lenth #34
I stand by my numbers. Around here we usually pay 60% the price of new on a good used piece of equipment. Anyone paying more is a fool.

Tires alone are $500 for a 5 tons trailer and if the trailer is more than a few years old unless recently replaced must always be factored in.

60% off of 3200 is 1920! That's just to much off.

/ Adding onto a trailer lenth #36
I agree with the 'good used' value of 60% of new cost, less the more condition declines.

In 2011, I gave $1600 for a 5 ton, 20' deck over, that needed one board replaced. Included the receiver, due to it having a pintle ring hitch, seller agreed to include... bought in the Pittsburgh PA area, sold due to that state no longer allowing Mobile home style ring wheels/hubs. The axles are Dexter brand, with brakes, not just cheap MH one time use crap. Reasonable price for condition and age.

If your trailer is in really nice shape, and you're not pushed for time, it's not gonna hurt a thing to price it high, and wait a bit... maybe include OBO, 'or best offer' in your ad... you just might find the perfect new owner who has enough money to keep you from squealing too much when you sell it...

Good luck with sale... Craigslist, local trade papers, etc.

That's about right. In your area price it a 2 grand and it will sell this week.

It's the cost of doing business. Does you no good to have the wrong tool for the job. It's all part of the cost for the lesson.

I understand and hope you get your asking price. Reality us unless it's nearly brand new that's a tough task.

No way most people will buy used when new can be had for a few dollars more.

Look at a two year old vehicle. It's worth about 60% of new. Same goes with a camper, boat, ect, ect.
