Flail Mower Let's talk flail mowers

I've been looking for a used flail, and came across this. It's a front mount. Can it be modified to sit on the 3 point. Rotation? I haven't seen this in person yet View attachment 471784View attachment 471785View attachment 471786
A 3PT hitch could be salvaged from another implement and welded on without much trouble. However, the gearbox is mounted very low and I'd be concerned that it cannot be easily adapted for a rear PTO.

The real question is why don't you just get the whole rig? I've always wanted a front mount flail!

yes I tried that with no luck. I can see where there was more numbers on it at one that were not stamped but they are no longer legible.

Are you saying that the knives that do not have the slotted holes will not open up when rotating?

Yes, As long as the new beast is working for now I would not worry too much for now though.

Do not go anywhere near it, it was a municipal machine and it already had one gauge wheel arm broken as evident from the paint on the right wheel set.

The other thing is the gearbox as its being driven by the automatic transmission and this trackless vehicle is 160HP+-.

Go to Tractor House and Auction Time to buy if you want used.

I was riding past the local JD dealer one day,,, and I made an impulse purchase!!

I think it was my first ever AG impulse purchase,,, it is way better than the old 6 1/2 foot bush hog!!:D

I like that offset as well, but wondering how much work it would be to load and then center it on my trailer. Trailer is large enough and want to move together with tractor. Nice setup you have.

Will your mule raise the mower high enough to load it? But not B4 you disconnect the PTO SHAFT- if you have lower link extenders with the top link fully extended it would probably load and unload it with no issues if its a flat bed with open sides and be able to secure it on a front corner of the trailer.

You always want to back up the trailer so the greater weight is facing downward
when backing and driving forward down the ramp.

All you need is a signal flag of the road sign size and a tube with a threaded wood screw to hold it while transporting it and the flag will also give you perspective while mowing.

An even better idea is a bicycle flag with a whip spring "for mowing only".

That tractor alone is 7 1/2 feet wide,,, add the 3 feet of mower hanging out,,, that is 10.5 feet wide, maybe only 10 feet.
I never measured the combo.
Better use some 14 foot mobile home axles, and build a special trailer,,,

I brought the mower home on my 10' dump trailer,,, it hasn't been off my place since then,,,

If I get stuck helping someone mow,,, I will take the six foot cut Gravely,,,,

I just got the JD,,, it hasn't gone anywhere,,, yet,,,

I wouldn't hesitate to purchase municipal as long as I knew which one.

I think making the three point hook up would be the easy part. As stated, being the gearbox is low that could be the tricky part.

Now my main concern is, is that a 540 gearbox?

Since the three point has to go on the front, would you leave the wheels on?

Might be able to use a chain drive from the PTO shaft down to the gear box, depending on the direction of rotation desired.

The input now to the gear box is probably around 2000 RPM.

It's a 540 gearbox. I decided not to pursue a deal. To far away and to much tinkering for me.

I Saw the county out mowing ditches yesterday. Didn't get a great look but they were using a Alamo flail mower on the 3 pt hitch and had one on a boom on the right side. But the interesting thing was the tractor had a big Alamo sticker on the middle of the side of the hood, no other mfg logo I could see.

So a question for those in the know, did Alamo ever sell complete setups with tractors and relabel the tractors as Alamo tractors?
