86 and feels like 97...needless to say I have stayed inside this afternoon.
but I planted sunflowers from 8am to 10am this morning, lot of bending over, and got about 2/3 done.
Ground is soft and wet, three times I lifted my foot and my shoe stuck in the ground. I felt like I was walking through a foot of snow; every step sunk down about six inches. Soft soil...super easy of course to plant in, just stick the seed on top, push it in with my finger about half an inch and lightly cover. Some of the seeds were really tiny and very hard to separate, particularly with muddy fingers. More rain due in later, should be great for kickstarting this field of sunflowers. Left enough room between rows to run the tractor/tiller between though I would only set if for several inches to clear weeds, not the 7 inches I got by dumping the tiller all the way down. I almost tilled it up too much...never had that happen before. When things are too easy...one should just be thankful.

I had sweat so much my hat was totally drenched, even using a sweat band. Drank water and OJ when I came in.
All clothes went into washer, made the walk to the shower au naturel as I was filthy and dripping. The joys of playing in the summertime dirt. And for sure am adding some salt to my vegetables now.

Try soaking the sweat band in water before putting it on. As the water evaporates, it'll cool your head. I normally wear a wetted down "doo-rag" (like some bikers wear under their helmets) under a broad brim ventilated hat I bought from Sportsmans Guide for about 20 bucks. Been doing this for quite a while. Besides keeping the sweat at bay, one's eye wear (glasses) don't get blurred from sweat up or slippery.

Another alternative is a pith helmet like some mail carriers wear during summer months. If it's made of real pith, just wet down the whole hat or wear the wetted down doo-rag under it. Got one of these hats too (wife worked at Good Will and brought it home).

69 and cloudy with 86 bringing thunderstorms later. only got .3 inch last night...northern VA much more.

Got a couple of free tickets to what turned out to be a really nice outdoor festival yesterday - Rassawek Jublilee. Had old restored log cabins to tour, James Madison's greenhouse, antique equipment and cars, 14 local wineries pouring samples, animals, etc. Here are some pix...first is what looked like a wood fired steam engine tractor - "Case" was painted on...don't know if Case made tractors that long ago. Also a 1947 Allis-Chalmers. And for Don, a Whippet car, sorry it's not a Whipper.

That is INTERESTING. Rassawik was the head village of the Monican Indians. The village was just up the Rivanna river from the James located inside the first big bend of the river, In other words on the farm I grew up on. My sister still owns the land where the village was. Rasawek was a hunting camp north west of richmond. Ed

Afternoon, Great day here on the North Bluff, Sun, 72, a nice wind and low humidity, Wife went into planting mode and asked for her water tank on the Gator. Here it is. 27 gallons, and does a nice job. Found a bunch of poison ivy growing next to some trails so I mixed up a batch of death and shot it all with the weed sprayer I also have for the gator. I know the Gator ain't big but it works just fine for our 8 acres. It is 11 years old in August this year and has 1,800+ hours on it. has been a nice tool to have around.
Now that I have that taken care of,,time for a beer!

Your history is very interesting! The site is near the Rivanna, just east of Columbia, up the hill from the James and was named after the Monacan village.

Rassawik ( My spelling is bad in plain english ) was about 2 1/2 miles west of Columbia. Ed

Good evening all. 66F this morning, made it to 93F second day in a row in the 90's. Started packing for bike trip, leave Friday. Have a lot to get done before leaving, including billing. 10-speed shed a crank-arm nut on the chain side, crank arm work loose and chain was self shifting :( . Couldn't find a replacement nut so 'borrowed" wife's bike, and the fit was wrong and worked too hard for such a slow time for 30 miles. :(

Good morning. The landscape has a noticeably different look to it today. Although one or two hawthorns are still in full blossom, such as this one, in a pit facing north, most of the views have returned to green.

doesn't look like I'm getting back into the garden/field for a few days, more than two inches predicted in next few days, with flash flood warnings out already.
Eric, I like your new avatar; an action shot instead of "still life"...

with all this rain the lawn seems to be growing an inch a day.
hmmm, just read the storm report, might get over five inches of rain here right along the coast as the tropical storm heads North. Worst seems to be East of here, but five inches of rain will sure test my ditches

Good morning everyone. 61 this morning going to 83. no chance of rain today and more important no chance of rain saturday, moving day. Will be glad when the move is over.

Eric That is pretty country. I guess I expected to be able to recognise The trees more than I could. They are all new to me and I grew up here knowing almost all of the trees.

Daugen Hope you are able to stay dry down there, Are they calling for much wend or just rain?

No cows and flat rocks then ! I hadn't heard that saying of yours before - now light showers will never be the same :).

That's right...no cows pissin' on a flat rock. No idea where that saying came from, but been using it all my life.
