Got to the bottom as to why my tractor smoked its first battery. The alternator was charging above 18v at 2000 rpm and dropping down to regular charging voltage as it approached idle. Eventually, the condition flagged a high voltage error code, but it was also flagging the check engine light. The check engine light would first come on at 2,500 rpm, then go off below 2,500 rpm. Then upon the the next cold start, the check engine light was flagging at 2,000 rpm and then off below 2,000 rpm. Then on the next start which was me loading onto my trailer to chase the tractor off to the dealer, the check engine light was flagging at 1400rpm.

The service manager was able to eventually figure out the alternator's integral regulator was screwing up, but he told me he had some time into it puzzling out the problem, as the fault would only occur when the machine was moving and so static testing didn't reveal the fault.

Glad you got that resolved... voltage issues manifest themselves in many ways. My scissor lift starts, runs and drives fine, but for some reason if the battery is somewhat low all of the functions randomly don't work.

This thread reminded me on something I wanted to follow up on. My tractor popped out of M twice for the first time the other day. I was running the Harley Rake in 2wd and it made a rather big "bang" and popped out of gear. Took me a second to realize what had happened, initially I thought something very horrible happened to the hydro. After that, I switched to 4wd as I was slipping a bit and finished the job, not sure if it's not as likely to happen in 4wd or if it was just dumb luck. I am in love with the Harley Rake.

Okay, if your tractor is doing what my tractor is doing, the shift lever physically moves from low or medium forward to neutral as you sit in the cab.

When it pops out of gear it makes a loud bang noise and the shift lever moves itself from in gear to neutral.

I think it is either a lack of undercut on the gears combined with oil temperature, and loading-unloading issues creating the exact conditions to pop out of gear or it is a bent or wearing shift fork from new. My conjecture, nothing proven.

I'm using Mobilfluid 424 which has been fully changed out twice since I received my tractor with 7.7hours on it.

I still have a camera aimed at my shift lever to prove the fault, which is a major PITA, but I get it, there must be some type of evidence in order to justify lifting the cab off and splitting the machine in half to inspect the gears and shift fork.

I made the 170 mile round trip to pick up my now repaired tractor. Sadly, once I got it back to the new parcel, I immediately realized that when I press the brake pedal, the headlights now come on. I'll call the dealer in the morning. Hopefully, the tech that worked on the machine can shed some light on the issue.

I know you like problem solving, Eric, but hopefully you won't have to sleuth this one out yourself! Curious to hear what happened.

BTW, was the shop able to repair the alternator, or did they replace it?

The alternator was replaced.

I have no shop or area to work on anything right now. The alternator was going full field sending over 18 volts into the machine when revved up. It set a high voltage code. I only became aware that something was happening when it started intermittently triggering the engine check light, at which point, lacking the computer scan tool and software, I brought my tractor into easiest-for-me-to-get to Kioti dealer. I had thought my battery died from vibration, but in hindsight, it was more likely cooked from high voltage. When I picked up the machine we were talking about what 18 volts into the electrical system could do to the rest of the electrical system.

For all I know, a relay is stuck on causing some kind of weird power or feedback loop.

I wonder if one of the rear light bulbs got replaced with a single filament bulb, shorting the brake lights through the lighting circuit?

You know like an 1156 light bulb being used where an 1157 should be, I've seen it before on cars. Even though they are supposed to fit sometimes folks just seem to "jam" them in there.

Fred, as it turns out what you described is exactly what happened. Back in 2014 an oak branch popped the left rear taillight off. I had to remove the guts from the housing in order to drill two new bolt holes. The guts are symmetrical and somehow I got the 1156 and 1157 bulbs backward. After sending 18v through the system, I presumed that the problem was related and lacked motivation to chase down electric gremlins in a meadow.

The tractor was back in service for an hour and then this happened. I put in two hours of work after I made this video:
