Mowing PTO Slip Clutch Question

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #21
I don't use any shield, never have, but then I'm smart enough to stay out of harm's way. I've farmed for decades and still have all my parts (and hair thought it's getting sparse).

Need....maybe. required, not really if you have some wits about you.
Shield keeps it from getting wet in the rain.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #22
Shield keeps it from getting wet in the rain.
So does keeping it sheltered, the shield is pointless anyway you shouldn't ever be around it when the pto is spinning anyway.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #23
Does anyone have a non-adjustable slip clutch like the King Kutter II tiller has on it. Cant find a photo of it to post right now. There are no external springs viewable on it. Not sure how it works but it does slip when a rock hangs up. I talked to the dealer when I bought it and he said there is no adjustment to it and it shouldn't be touched.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #24
My BIL purchased a used tractor that came with a light duty Landpride BH
and it came with a non-adjustable slip clutch and it works fine. This after
setting for about 14 years.

If using no shields is your personal preference that is up to you but why on earth would you tell someone they don't need something that protects someone from injury or death that costs $5.00? Please elaborate on the reasons not to have a safety shield in place. And please don't say because you shouldn't be near it or I haven't used one for decades.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #26
Thats an easy answer... I watch what I do all the time. Candidly, I never knew any shield was available. never seen one. I guess you could install shields and safety devices to the point of no liability, but I don't see the point in my personal use, so I don't and won't. Somehow, I think 5 bucks is way too cheap. You cannot get squat for 5 bucks today...

Whatever blows your dress up I guess.

So your explanation for telling someone they don't need a safety shield is because "I watch what I do all the time". I could have guessed.

I don't understand the shield anyway if your standing next to a rotating piece of PTO equipment the slip clutch is the least of your worries.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #31
Get up on the wrong side of the bed? I didn't personally attack anyone, especially you. Obviously you have the skin of an onion. Being from Illinois explains a lot...a lot of what I leave for your fertile imagination....

Having said that, I'm done with you.

Makes sense to me. Like I said, I've never seen a weasler slip clutch shield and I'm pretty sure, if it exists, it cost more that 5 bucks.... I guess you could fab an old Maxwell House coffee can to work. I don't see the point however.

Not at all. I get up on the right side every morning. As far as my skin it's a lot thicker than you will ever know. I guess your idea of a personal attack greatly varies from reality. I wonder out of your 5,603 posts how many were truly beneficial to this site. You should apologize to Thirsty for hijacking his thread and contributing absolutely nothing of value. You have a great day.

See post 28. It is between post 27 and 29.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #35
I am all for safety shields but had no idea one was even available for these PTO slip clutches. When I purchased mine there was not one listed as available and have yet to see any others advertised with a slip clutch. Mine is like the Cat yellow one the OP posted in the beginning.

Danger is all around us when using equipment and we need to be careful- shields or not. Many years ago my BIL's girlfriend was at the PTO driven PHD and somehow got a leg wrapped up in the auger. Terrible and lucky to have survived as it stripped most stuff off her leg to the bone.

/ PTO Slip Clutch Question #37
I have one of the agrisupply units, which looks identical but was cheaper when I bought. Mine installed using (2) 9/16 or 5/8 bolts, nuts & washers. I initially installed it on the tractors PTO stub to use on multiple implements--that was a mistake. I avoided damaging anything except the PTO shaft I cut to make it fit, and changed the mounting position the first time those whirring spring/bolt combinations slapped the control rope, and got me thinking what better odds for snagging... me... branches to wind around the shaft and slap at the hydraulic lines or wiring... or me! You run a winch with you off a tractor, and the pto stub is right there. I didn't even need a slip clutch for the winch, as the control rope tension is the slip clutch, but I wanted to have the clutch on the tractor stub to use for everything... like you mentioned.
It's too dangerous a spot to mount it, its too heavy to mount there, and is unnecessary on many implements. Hard on bearings.
Regarding shielding--that's a personal choice, but it is the ounce of prevention on a driveline that makes a trip, stumble, loose article of clothing a heart-racing instead of heart breaking experience. Nothing beats a cautious operator, except mechanical controls that keep all operators (regardless of experience) away from the danger. They are the system set up to isolate the rotating shaft from everything else.

Thats a mystery that we should pursue. ... How does this work and remain consistent over time and wear?

Some shields get in the way of hookup or detach, greasing, etc ... Thus they become a functional problem.
