At some point I'd like to add a backhoe to my tractor ( how I found this site) either built or bought. My tractor only has 4.4 gpm, so probably not enough to run a backhoe, external pump will most likely be a necessity. I've seen rear pto pumps and they would probably be fine, but I was thinking about a mid mount pump. I've got a mid pto just sitting there not doing anything and not planning on doing anything with it, so.... I've skimmed over a dozen or so threads about the subject and didn't see much in the way of anything being completed. Has anyone run one long term? Pros and Cons? What would you do differently?

I'm not opposed to a rear pto pump, but I am a 3pt hitch mount. I just thought a mid pto pump would be a novel approach as it's not being used. I envision a permanent self contained mount for the pump and a 4 point mount for the hoe, quick release style with 2 quick couplers for the hoses. 2 pins and 2 hoses and it's on or off.

Below is exactly what my brother purchased last spring for his J.D. 30 something , newer version of the 790 . It is around a a 25 + or - pto tractor . We used it this past spring in putting a complete underground sprinkler system in at Our Mom's house , over 900' of pipe . It is pretty cool in that you don't have to be running at max rp to dig , were as my TC 30 with Factory 757 BH functions best above 1500 rpm's .

6'Dig Tractor Backhoe w Tank Pump Filter PTO Powered Cat I 25HP BHM6 | eBay

His did not cost that much as it was on sale . Also purchased a 5' tiller , that is pretty impressive and even Her neighbors have said the Garden soil looks better than it ever has .

@ Looking4new I did check your link, but they are all 3pt mounted. I know there are a bunch of them sold, but I just don't see how more housings aren't broken. I'd prefer a subframe type, I know Woods makes a subframe for my tractor, just don't know the model #.

I have a sub mount on my TC 30 and Brothers is a 3 point . I was skeptical of 3 points , But in operating his last summer , One would have to abuse it beyond what I would even do with a sub frame to break housing's or anything else . There was a issue with TC 30's breaking housing's on a few tractors here on the board , BUT there was never a " This Caused " it answers . To many varibles even with a sub frame . For instance , Using the stabilizers or BH bucket to " Lift " the BH to tighten the top link tighter . BAD idea !! Causes to much torque between BH and rear of tractor .
If one use's either BH mount to the limit of the Tractor and BH spec's , I really doubt there will ever be a problem .

Yeah, I've skimmed over a few of those threads and others like them, that's part of my concern. I'm no Engineer but in my mind the attachment points on a tractor are designed for pulling or pushing in one direction and not for the twisting/tugging and shock loads from all directions. If I break something on a subframe I can most likely repair it myself, If I break a chunk off the rear housing it's a costly trip to my local dealer. Usually I baby my stuff, but my stepkids and neighbor could break an anvil in a sandbox with a marshmellow hammer so it's a real concern.

I've looked through that thread too. I'd have to agree with most of the statements there.
