You can get better traction with narrow tires.

In snow that is true for cars but I cannot see how that would be true on a tractor in a field. Explanation???

Snow and cow poop have a lot in common. :D

My soils tend to have clay in it up high heavily supplemented by bovine fertilizer. My wider tires tend to spin and stay high at which time I have to go back to the barn to trade tractors. My narrower deeper lug tires tend to dig through the poop and clay and get down to firmer soil and get traction when feeding the herd. Hence my comment that narrow tires "can" (read:may not always) provide more traction. As always, individual situations and traction may vary.

Ground pressure. The skinny tires have higher pounds per square inch of contact than a larger one. Same weight, applied over more surface area = lower force.

Yes but is it the narrower tire or the deep R1 lugs that help more with traction? If you took two R4 tires of different widths, which would have more traction? I'd think that the wider would. Snow is a special case as narrow tires cut through the snow to make contact with the pavement below rather than riding on top but I don't think that would be particularly relevant in a farm/field situation (without snow).

Yes, lower force/weight per square inch of tire contact with larger tires. But, more surface area in contact so more friction which presumably translates to better traction. Why do dragsters have big fat tires instead of narrow tires on the drive wheels?

Because they need more surface area to keep from spinning too much and they can't be heavier without taking a penalty in acceleration. Those tires are also set to very low psi so the sidewalls flex. It's not an apples to apples comparison.

When you increase footprint, you do it so you can apply more power to the surface of ground, not so you can cut deeper into it. Snow doesn't translate force like dirt does. You want to sink down through it so you can get to hard earth and skinny tires get you there. Same with mud. Skinny mud tires are designed to excavate the path of the tire to solid dirt at the bottom.

Yep, that is what I am seeing. They cut through the cow carp and get to firm soil.

This "Grapple Picture Thread" has derailed.

Let's try to get back on topic fellas, there are plenty of discussions about tires elsewhere on the forum.
(Or, if you just HAVE to have these discussions, at least post a photo with every off topic reply :))

More pics please. :)

A few picture posts to make up for off topic posts. I can only post one photo per post from my cell phone so they'll be in separate penance posts.

Another big Maple stump. Note odd shape held securely by single lid light duty grapple even though most of stump is well forward of grapple jaws. Light duty single lid grapples RULE!!!

Don't need to get off or ever touch them Island. You pick one, drive over to the other and set it down, then re-aim and grab both. But you know, 95% of the time it's not an issue right? ;)

Now that is something I cannot do with my single lid. I presume however that you got off the tractor to line up those logs so you could pick them up at the same time.

I normally wouldn't call myself lazy, but when I'm operating my tractor I am extremely "lazy". In fact, one of the reason I've spent so much time adding my rear hydraulics, was so I could use implements with as many hydraulic functions as possible, simply to be more efficient and reach my 'goal' of never getting off my tractor seat when I'm working, except to take pictures! I don't like to get off the tractor to angle my rear blade, lower the scarifiers on my box blade, adjust my side link, top link, or even line up my implements when hooking them up (hence the quick hitch.) So I'll be damned if I'm going to get off the tractor to load something that I could otherwise use hydraulics for!

So, please understand when I say I am slightly offended by your presumption that I would actually remove my lazy butt from the tractor seat, muscle around some heavy items, line them up with the perfect spacing, just to pick up two items at one time! :D
(Kidding, I'm not actually offended :D)

All you have to do, is open the grapple, clamp down on the first item to be picked up (whether that be rocks, logs, hay, whatever) then drive to the second item, curl the grapple down to the dump position, open the grapple right over the second item (the first will fall on to the ground) then lower the grapple over both items at once, and clamp down on both.

When you are carrying items a decent distance, this literally cuts the time in half.

Matt, you're a man after my own heart. :D I'll spend a lot of energy up front on something if it means I can be lazy there after.

My stump pile is at the very corner of my property, across the street from whiny neighbors who complained to the township that I didn't mow my grass. So I killed all of it and now pile my un-burnable debris across from their driveway. It's nearly a quarter mile from where my house is going, and if I didn't have my little trailer to haul them on, I'd be rolling two deep in the lids too.
