Since the OP is leaning towards a small genset, I will throw it out there that I made the mistake of buying a cheap knock off genset years ago.... It was loud and lasted less than 100 hours. It was also a REAL pain to start after a short while. Ended up with a Yamaha 2000, and 3000 (RV air conditioner). For a less expensive alternative to red/blue, the Champion inverter gensets are very well reviewed by users over at the RV.NET forum.

I've been wondering about the Champions, my biggest concern is noise, it needs to be extremely quiet for when needed at campgrounds. I will start doing more research on them as their much better priced than the Honda and Yamaha units. Thanks

I bought a champion 8000w in the summer of 2012. Used it about 40 to 50 hours the first few days after we got it due to power outage. It sat about a year, used it a few more hours for another power outage. Sat for another year, dead of winter, power outage. Ran for about another 24 hours, not continuously, and the motor locked up. Less than 100 hours total run time, always fresh fuel and full of oil. Over 2 years from purchase date, no warranty help.

^^^ I was given one when a neighbor moved... worked real well and not loud.

Used it a few hours every couple of months... then it would not start for love or money... tried a little starting fluid and kicked right off... fuel flows.

The small engine shop said he had about a dozen to repair saying reformulated fuel issues...

I like the engine driven generator head idea. It probably wouldnt fit in many engine compartments (especially V-8 or V-6 engines), but should be fine in my Cummins Dodge.

Has anyone else gone this route?

The one that I saw was in an older ('80s) 4 cyl Toyota pickup. He used an AC clutch to turn the generator on and off. The bracket looked like it may have been for an AC compressor.

Duplicate!!! Why does this site insist on doing that??

None, of us really know.. It started a few years ago, from a software upgrade on the forum software, and it has been with us ever since.. You can delete the extra posts, and I usually do, but nothing I know we can do to stop it.

I tried to do that, but I can't get "Delete Post" to work.

After you hit edit, you have 3 more buttons to press.. Delete, delete message, and delete down at the bottom... So delete, delete, delete.
