Looking for ideas on this. Engine cranks very fast but has a slight miss sensation that translates to vibration around 1600 rpms. I replaced injectors but didn't change anything. Does this sound like a pump or timing issue?

Sounds like a compression issue ,possibly a head gasket, burnt valve or injection pump issue...start with a compression test, or at.least Crack the injectors one at a time at 1600rpm when it's missing. .find the weak cylinder first. .I don't like throwing parts at a problem unless you have no other options ..

Great input thank you. I'll provide more info on this also. When I bought this tractor it had been sitting for about 12 years. Had straight water in radiator which as you can image grew some nasty stuff causing the tractor to over heat first time I ran it. Unfortunately I think I ran it for a bit before realizing the issue. Secondly, I put a fuel stabilizer plus cleaner in the old fuel which may could have loosen up crap in the tank causing it to head through the fuel system. I did replace the fuel filter but have wondered if something made it to the pump or injectors. The injectors can be ruled out though as I have replaced them. Thank you for your post.

ps, when cracking injector lines, use a tool, and keep hands away from pressurized fuel.

Will this work to check compression? If so how do I use it? I'm assuming remove 1 injector at a time with the fuel turned off and turn her over is part of the equation???

it's the right type of gauge ( diesel vs gas ).

whether it fits your injector hole or not, I can't say. RickB will probably know, maybee Ultradog. They work on more diesels than I do / have more experience with the later tractors.

Yeah that's my worry. Maybe there is a adapter that can be used if not. If anyone knows please let me know. Thank you

RickB or Ultradog! Any thoughts?

111549.jpg The Napa kit will get you the basics, but you'll need the adapter in the middle pictured in the following kit.95279.jpg Toolsource #: 95279 Manufacturers #: 34800 Also known as:
SGT-34800. Can't find similar in Napa, but both are online at Toolsource.

I have it on order now and look forward to giving it a try. Really think I have a burnt valve or other issue as power seems down recently. The strange part is that in cold weather it still cranks almost instantly.

Guys so I'm back working on this tractor but have still not found a resolution yet. First off it's actually a 4600 not a 4610 but still same 201 Diesel engine. We have now adjusted valves which were found to be in spec. We have done a compression test on all 3 cylinders. All are were well in spec per Ford specifications. Injectors were replaced. Fuel filter replaced. Timing was found to be advanced to 7 or so. Apparently someone has been monkeying with it in the past as Ford spec says to start at 0. Seems have more power and smoke less now but the vibration still exist between 1600-1800. Also we put in new fuel shut off valve in fuel tank. So now I'm out of ideas. Anyone have any thoughts as to what could be causing the issue? Also it's engine related as it does it in gear or out of gear. Causes stuff to shake and vibrate badly on the tractor and is very annoying. Thank you

Did you check for bent push rods while adjusting the valves or check lift? Did the pistons have full travel? It might be worth dropping the oil pan and checking for a bent rod.

What's the history on the "miss"? Was it like this when you got it? Did the engine ever hydro-lock?

I didn't check the rods yet. As for the history it ran smooth I thought when I bought it a couple years back. Then one day I noticed the vibration in 1600-1800 range. It overheated briefly one time as the radiator was low but can't remember if vibration started before or after that. Lastly what is hydrolock? Thank you

Hydrolock is any type of liquid puddling on top of a piston. Piston cannot complete compression stroke because of foreign material. Something usually bends.

Ok none of that happened as far as I know. Could something be wrong with the fuel pump?

Thanks for the info. I did just change the fuel filter to see but no change with new one
