Hey all, just curious why the pto shuts off when I hit the reverse pedal in my 2013 3520. Is it a safety thing or a protect the tractor thing?? It is just an inconvenience while using my 59" front mount snowblower? I can retrain myself, but just curious why it is this way or if there is a way to change it??

Thanks
Brad

Apparent that it is on yours (called a RIO) for mower mount.
If on mine, I take it out of the circuit so I don't have to go through the "training".
Overzealous safety-minded mfg's being set up by the long line of lawyers, sue happy people, and the do-gooders in the Gov't.. just my opinion. ;)

You can blame the creationists ( intelligent design now days ) who are trying to legislate to prove Darwin was wrong and idiots can live long enough to breed.

Not only are they living long enough to breed here in the US they are multiplying like rabbits. What better way to get on the dole.

And, youve had to pay for that feature and will pay for the added wear it causes in the powertrain.

Unfortunately, that feature was added due to instances of people backing up over a child with the mower running. Somehow they felt that having to push a button to keep mower running in reverse will make people look behind them before they back up. It is the most ridiculous safety device ever thought of IMO. You can't blame the manufacturers for these ridiculous features. Blame the irresponsible people that blame other manufacturers when they screw up. Also blame the lawyers, judges, and juries that award big settlements to people that sue for their own stupidity. The manufacturers are forced to try and make equipment idiot-proof, and everyone pays higher prices and are inconvenienced in the process.

I knew this "feature" was on the Deere lawn tractors...when was it incorporated on the CUTs?

So every time you reverse, you have to throttle back down to just above idle so that it doesnt shear a pin or put too much strain on the shafts when it kicks back in? What a crock. If I were in your shoes, I would disable that feature before I destroyed my PTO shaft and all the equipment hooked to it because I am sure that you will forget to reduce RPM each time after you reverse.

All that feature is doing is putting way too much wear and tear on the tractor's PTO drive train with the excessive starting and stopping. If I had a lawnmower that did that, I would disable it also.

I remember a TBN member asking once why his Zero Turn mower didnt stop each time he reversed like his tractor style lawnmower did, like he wanted it to stop when he pulled back on the control arms which one has to do to turn effectively. Some folks just need TOO MUCH safety and perhaps should never be allowed on powered equipment.

I think this feature was added for 2013 model year. Just like the lawn tractors, there is a switch to pull to keep pto operating in reverse. The thing i really dislike about the feature is, it not only shuts off pto, it kills the engine as well.

Yes, this is true, it will kill the engine if you keep trying to reverse. If you let off quickly it only stops PTO from turning. Yes, frustrating to stop PTO back up throttle down and then re-engage PTO and re-throttle... I do worry about unnecessary wear. So, where is the switch or fuse or whatever to disable it??

On the 1-series, there is an electric hall-effect device for use with front mounted implements that disables the RIO "feature". Pretty sure the 2 and 3 series are supposed to have this also.

You can check out this also https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=pJQImLH5gzw

(just put the http://www. in front and take out the extra spaces, TBN blocks GTT links like cuss words...)

This has to relate to the MMM PTO which makes that SCUT an oversize lawn tractor. My (2013) 4105 only has a rear PTO and doesn't have this safety interlock RIO.

Of course, my D110 does have the RIO.

First thing I did with my D130 was bypass the RIO. What a joke. What next rear view cameras on our lawn mowers. Proximity sensors.

I would not be surprised to see proximity sensors on tractors and mowers before long.

I need one of them every now and then.

What JD110 said. My youngest had no brains and would forever slip out of the house and try to get a ride while I was cutting the lawn.

My 2013 3032E does not do this when I'm running my brush hog, the PTO stays engaged when I push the reverse pedal. I don't have a mid PTO, maybe that is the difference.

And I'd say he had no discipline... ;)
I'm from the old school, and if they tried it just once after being told, then they would get what was coming to them.
But that is just my opinion, worth little in this situation.

That is exactly how my father trained us about safety!
