Hi there. After the last time of pulling my pump and aging I want to make some easier way then just yanking it. In my case its 130 foot down, with Black ''well pipe'There is of cource the wires and also the nylon safety rope.
Yesterday I had to work on the upper end.(pitless adapter) end So I could pull it up and now use the tractor loader frame to tie the rope off onto to steady it. This works fine but it got me to thinking of something Id like to build..
Given the relative short dept of pipe and weight, I come up with a simple i hope idea.
I am thinking something like a cheap HF winch. But instead Id want a slighly larger intake wheel so I could hook the well nylon rope onto it.This winch would be mounted onto the bucket etc some how. But would allow me to slowly raise the pump and with a second person they could walk it out onto the lawn.
So my first thought is what to use to make this intake wheel.I double all the rope would fit on the wheel on the winch.
Any ideas would be great. thanks..

What about using the HF winch like a capstan winch? Remove the cable, and add a thick layer of rope to increase the spool diameter. The run your well pump rope around the spool a few times and back out. Keep tension on that loose end of rope while you walk it (and the water pipe) out across the lawn while someone runs the winch.

Not sure how much weight you are lifting, but a Rope Puller might do it. The rope doesn't get spooled, just passes through the grooved pulley, so rope length is unlimited.

If you need something stronger, you could modify a winch to work this way.

I carry this one in my truck. It is rated at 1500 lbs.

Do a search on "Rancher's Pipe Holder".
Between that tool, an FEL & maybe a helper, you should be able pull up & lower back a pretty heavy pipe string.

For my windmills, I use a tool called a pipe dog vise to pull up the drop pipe a few feet at a time. As the pipe comes up, the vise slips down to ground level as the pipe is secured and the winch cable relaxed.

Some guys use a hydraulic motor to run their winch because of the good up and down control. Use the loader curl circuit to run he winch and leave the bucket raise /lower function intact.

When pulling the entire well pump or cylinder, keep in mind that you disconnect a section of pipe as it comes up, so you need to manage about 11 feet of lift. This keeps the CG of the pulled pipe section below the vise clamp and thus the end stays down. This is especially good to know when you want to put it all back together.

I take it you're using black poly pipe, same as I used. How about an old car wheel or atv wheel to wind the rope on? Seems like it would work. Of course you'd have to butcher the winch to get it on there.

A Frame with pulley/snatch block and hook the safety rope onto the tractor and drive away. Gotta brace the A frame so you don,t pull it over. Tie a vehicle on one side, pull from the other with tractor

A Frame, pulley/snatch block and manual boat winch using the safety rope.

Just think A Frame and all kinds of simple cheap methods will come to mind.

Or a lever with unequal arms, fairly high pivot point and a fellow to clamp the pipe after you raise it?

Sorry - thought you had metal pipe - this probably wouldn't work with the plastic pipe, which bigdeano mentioned.

First time my well went out years ago I paid a Pro and watched carefully. They use a boom truck and simply slide a hose clamp down and tighten each lift. After that I made a 2 by 12 with cutout for well pipe, carefully double vise griped each lift with FEL. Pulled 240 foot well easy in about 1 hour. Hope this helps.

Some well guys around here make a jig that fits on top of the well pipe that incorporates a wheelbarrow sized wheel to allow pulling sideways.
Essentially it is an outer sleeve that slides onto the existing well pipe with an inner collar to rest on the well casing.
Vertical arms support the axle that the small wheel in such a way as to center over the well pipe.
With this 'wheel rig' they then can extract pump and lines by pulling sideways in any direction using trucks, tractor or even a car.

The more elaborate set up uses the same 'pipe header' but has a trailer mounted 48" drum to coil the lines on as they roll 'er up.
That drum I've seen powered in many ways with the best being a ring gear about the size of the drum driven by a small sprocket using various power sources.

In all cases they simply attach to the pitless adapter to pull. Naturally the pump wires need to be severed near the adapter.

I pull my pump with this winch., that goes in a receiver on the bucket. The cable goes thru a pulley at the top of the tower. Because windmills have a sucker rod the pump is connected to 1-1/4" steel pipe, with the sucker rod inside.

A pipe elevator is a tool that clips onto the top of each pipe section to quickly grab the pipe.

In thin photo I needed to precisely tug some 2" high pressure poly pipe, so used the winch for good control.

The winch also works great to yank our shrubs around the house.

Thats pretty much what im thinking of except I want to make the reel bigger and no cable so I can run the nylon rope on it and have a ''full pull'
Just thought of maybe having an aditional two wheels together and one would have the winch wire would around it and the second wheel would have the nylon and then when the winch retrieved the cable it would turn on wheel and cause the nylon hooked one to also reel in.

Remember the reel diameter has a large effect on how much you can lift.

GOOD point..I think if i match the reel diamter to the winch size then I will be ok. not sure. I would have to see how much 140 foot of the rope takes up.

My pump is in a well house 4 feet wide. I take a 3 foot X 5 inch piece of PVC pipe, slip in a 2X4 that is then screwed into building stud walls, and use it as a roller placed about 3 feet high and centered above well.
Pull rope goes over PVC roller and pump wiring and black pipe are fed below roller.
Pull rope is tied to tractor bucket along with wire and black pipe but pull load is on pull rope only. I back tractor out at compound idle with a helper (wifey) guiding wire and pipe as it comes out of well.
Question is, can you get the PVC roller ridged & roughly centerd above well mounted? If you can this setup should fly. By the way my well is 285 ft. deep.

cheers,
keoke (george)

The winch allows close monitoring of rope tension. If the pump should snag on a joint the rope could break.

There are wireless remote controls available for the winches. With a remote you might be able to have the winch further away, with the cable strung out. Along the ground.

The PVC roller idea listed above is very good. Another option is a snatch block used normally to double a winches capacity, available from TSC or other places.

Remember if you use one that the loading on the pulley or roller support is the vector of the up force and the sideways force from the winch.

A winch is pretty useful. If you make one special purpose for the well it limits its use for other purposes.

Got any neighbors with big round hay bales? They work well to lay the pipe over and pull out with a lawn (or bigger) tractor.

Its simpler than that. A 'real' pump puller is simply a spinning tire that pulls the hose up - like a baseball launcher but way slower. Get a small metal wheel that uses the dished rim to guide the hose, and a 8-10" rimmed tire from Harbor Freight for $10 and drive the tire with a motor. Clamping hardware design is left to the user.

The guys who pulled my pump used something like Jay is talking about. It had three wheels, two of which are fixed and the third can be swung out of the way. When the third wheel is in place all three tire's treads touch each other with the pipe in the middle. One of the wheels is driven by an electric motor. It had a brake on it as well so when the power is off the pump wouldn't go back down into the well. This is the best picture I could find.
