I'm about to put down a deposit on Tuesday for a 5085e. Would you recommend it?

if it was a vent you would think it would have some kind of a filter/ check valve to keep dirt and debris out.

what puzzles me most is that it is a threaded hole..

.
Many times there is a cotter key in the hole. It is put in loose enough to jiggle around. This keeps the hole free of debris.

It's a bad seal or the gasket on front of trans, if it has one. Better get it fixed before you have to buy a new clutch.

I've ran the tractor 3 times since I posted the OP, since my dealer won't be open until tomorrow.

The first time, I ran it about 30 minutes. No leaking.

The second time was about 1 hour, there was some dripping afterwards.

Ran today for about 2 hours, no dripping.

I think we should hold tight and not speculate, as the last Magicman reported on Sept 1, no leak.

And the serviceman was going to check it out maybe next week.

No problem with it. Buy the tractor, use it and have fun.

My JD 2030 has the cotter pin and it works. I've seen where the cotter pin was removed and mud dabblers filled the hole.

If it is a bad seal in the trans, how hard/easy is it to split the tractor?

Are they going to be able to do it on a service call or will they want it to be taken to the dealer's shop?

Most technicians will want tractor at dealer shop for a split.

Called another local dealer today, since my other dealer is too busy and won't get back to me.

They are coming to pick up the tractor tomorrow. The service manager I talked to said he's seen several 83E's and 85E's with the same problem, and its a leaky seal on the front end of the transmission. He said the seal doesn't sit in there very tight, and sometimes they leak. None that he's fixed have leaked again.

Glad you found a competent dealer! I'd stick with him. Hope my new one doesn't leak. Maybe she will be good to go after this.

Can you ask him what else to watch for problem wise?

Transmission input shaft seal (On the engine side) was not set right and as a result was allowing engine oil to leak around it.
