My neighbor has one of everything it seems, and this little dozer has been parked behind his shop for 2-3 years (bought a much bigger Case). It sat for 2 years, but started right away when he needed to move it recently....it runs well, but developed a hydraulic leak while sitting. It runs so well he was actually considering pulling the engine to save for a future project, and scrapping the rest of the machine. He swears the UC is in good shape, but I've run tracked machines before, but know very little about maintaining them...the sprockets and shoes look okay, but I have no idea about the pins, links, bushings, etc (trying to study up on the topic).

He has to dig up the manuals, and couldn't recall if it's a 2244, or 200...any idea?

He would probably sell it to me for little more than scrap value, and I have plenty of dirt to move, and trails to cut....and it's literally across the street. Assuming it needed a new hydraulic pump ($500), and all new hoses, would it be worth giving him $1000 or so? The tach says 2,500 hours, but it may have been broken for a long time. Thoughts? Yes, I know MF dozer parts can be hard to obtain since they were made overseas, and only for a few years.

I would look on the hydraulic pump and try to find manufacturers name and model number, then begin calling around to either find a replacement or having it rebuilt. He is selling it at about scrap metal price, so you cannot go too wrong in buying it.

Thanks....that's kind of what I was thinking. I did some research, and the pump for both the 200 and 2244 was also used on farm tractors, so they're readily available. If that turns out to hold true, I expect it shouldn't be too hard to find someone to rebuild it, and even if I have to go new, it won't break the bank. My thought was if I can keep it to something like $2-3K total, there's no way to go wrong.

I was able to get a factory rebuilt hydraulic pump(Cessna) from International Harvester for my IH. The cost was not cheap, but reasonable.

I would change hydraulic fluid and filters after it has been sitting that long. I am sure it will be milky.

If the price is close to scrap price I don't think you can go wrong. Especially if you have a use for it. Might have some difficulty finding parts but all parts anymore, seems to me, comes at a premium price. But what are you going to do. If the manufacture is the only one that sells the part you have to pay what they are charging. Good luck if you do purchase.

Yeah, I would definitely change all the fluid and filters....no idea how long it's been in there.

I definitely have a use for it, and you're right, it seems like parts for everything are expensive!

So, I wound up buying it from him for $1k this weekend. It started right up, but the shuttle shift control feels like it isn't connected to anything in the tranny....so it won't move now. The blade and ripper both work perfectly, so now I need to get a manual, and parts manual, and do some research. Surprisingly, the tranny fluid looked very clean. The oil is a bit dark, but not terrible.

Oh, i found the data plate, and its a 2244 as i suspected. We'll see what happens!

Great pictures. Great find..... even if it was across the street! That sure will make some nice trails for ya.
Let us know what happened with the tranny?!? Let's hope for just a broken connection.
More pics when you use it please.

If you ever wear out the tracks on your dozer parts are still being used on other equipment and is available off the shelf apart from the sprocket.
Is the trany powershift or manual?

That's good to know....thanks!

Since the tranny isn't working, I'm guessing a bit, but based off the parts manual, I think it's the hydraulic shuttle.

I operated a MF 100 dozer away back in the early 70s and had a manual transmission with a foot clutch and FNR lever on the left side of the dash. Gees that's going along way back, didn't have earhair then:eek:

heres to ya, that ya just need to do some adjusting of things and get the transmission working again!

since ya initially checked oil, and then ran it, have you rechecked oil? perhaps some air was trapped in transmission some place, and ya need to fill it up some more.

MF never made a 100 dozer. New undercarriage may or may not be available depending on the model. MF300 undercarriage isn't available from what I've read. If you look on the bottom of the oil pan, it should have the casting date to give you an idea of when it was made.

Looks better already since you got it!

I would love to find something like that.

Small Dozers in good condition go for a premium here... if you can find someone that will part with one.

Thanks guys...I really can't wait to get this baby back up and running. I've spent a lot of time going over the machine, and the parts manual, just to get a feel for where everything is. I'm hoping that it's simply a linkage in the shuttle shift control, but may try to put a gauge on a line from the pump that supplies the shuttle shift to see if it has pressure...luckily that pump is available, and it's only $250, if it's bad.

I have rechecked the fluid in the tranny, and it seems to be full, or close enough it should work. I've confirmed it's a hydraulic shuttle, and when you move the lever, or the linkage, it's not connected to anything.

Funny thing, but a mechanic at work is dying to buy it from me already. I may work a deal where he gets the tranny sorted out in exchange for use so he can fix up his dad's pond. I also happened to find a Craigslist ad for a similar machine (manual shuttle) locally, and they're asking $7500 for it!

Asking price is just that. It's really hard to compare machines without knowing anything about them. Hopefully it's a simple fix to get it working.

I doubt they'd get $7500 for that other machine, and I wasn't really making a comparison...just thought it was an interesting coincidence.

I talked to my neighbor some more, and he said that when the tranny stopped working, he put a gauge on the lines from the hydraulic pump to the transmission, and were getting very little pressure (like 70psi). So, I pulled that pump off today, and confirmed that the pump drive was working. The shaft would barely turn, so I thought that was the problem. When I went to split the pump I noted that someone had cranked down on the bolts ridiculously tight. As soon as I took a bit of pressure off, bingo the shaft turned freely, without any binding, play, or weird noises. There was evidence of RTV on the face of the pump, and I'm wondering if someone didn't crank down on those bolts because there was a slight leak they were trying to stop, and didn't realize they were the wrong bolts. I'm going to reinstall the pump and see what happens tomorrow.
