Rotary Cutter Brushog boggs down too easy?

I have the same Bush Hog..Squealer ....Are you at 540 rpms ? That's all I can think of ...not enough power unless you are in high gear and moving along too fast, if it's not high grass....You say grass conditions...but if that grass is real thick ..it can bog you down according to the power you are putting to it...

Also, there is no squeal like there used to be when I engage the PTO

Sharp blades and a slower speed should solve the bogging down.

It may seem counter intuitive, but tall thick grass can be some of toughest material to bush hog. Try a slower wheel speed in these areas where your bogging down as your tractor isn't making enough horsepower to power through these spots. It's much less likely that the bush hog itself is failing. If it was, I'd suspect it would be fairly obvious.... i.e. Huge vibration, gearbox smoking, gearbox seizing, something like that

Something is slipping. Do you have a slip clutch on the bushog. ... or ... Does the PTO shaft from the tractor slow down when the bh bogs?

Yes PTO slows to a stop when it bogs. Maybe clutch?

denotes optional shear bolt or slip clutch.

possibility of wrong metal grade and size of bolt for shear bolt. i shear bolt is not some bolt you just go buy at local hardware store, a specific grade of metal and diameter needs to be had. or the bolt will not shear (cut in half) like it should if you hit something. and end result damaging your tractor could happen.

new slip clutches, you need to burn the varnish off of the clutch...
www.everythingattachements.com has a video and some text if memory serves detailing about how to adjust them and setting up correctly. for use with rotatory cutters (bush hogs) bush hogs = trade name.

assumption, your RPM gauge on tractor has a tic mark to denote at what RPM's you need the engine at, to get 540 RPM's at the PTO. double checking your operating manual for tractor should also tell ya at what RPM's your tractor needs to be at to get 540 RPM's at the PTO shaft.

double check you have correct PTO shaft lengths, to long, and you can bind the PTO shaft up to pont of bending it, to short and the PTO shaft will slide apart on you. also PTO shaft shield may need to be cut to length as well. *this is normal thing for all PTO shaft equipement*

double check you have correct 3pt hitch settings for both the top link, and the side link for lower lift arm. along with tail wheel adjustment.
if deck is setting at different angles, weeds can stay under deck longer, and in a sense become like a finish mower mulching blade to some extent requiring extra HP from tractor engine to turn the blades.

there is razor sharp, and then there is butter knife sharp, and blunt / dull, and then just plain dull blades. weeds even regular yard grass, will dull a razor sharp blade quickly. a butter knife or even a tad duller than that, will stay sharp and cutting for a longer time, and without much extra HP from tractor.

the dip stick for gear box oil, should be plug that you poor / check for gear box oil level. same plug. assumption is plug is on one of the sides or on the rear of the gear box.

slip clutch, is between the PTO shaft and gear box on the rotatory cutter (bush hog) it is the round funky device just before the gear box, most likely under a plastic or metal shielding.

If the tractor PTO is stopping, I think it's as simple as not enough power to mow through the material as fast as you are. Slow down and mow it more often so it doesn't get so tall.

If your PTO stub is stopping you have a problem with your PTO clutch. Hopefully it is not burnt up. Have it adjusted immediately.

If the tractor PTO is stopping, I think it's as simple as not enough power to mow through the material as fast as you are. Slow down and mow it more often so it doesn't get so tall.

if the tractor pto is stopping.. the engine should be stopping!!!

if the engine does not stop.. but the lil pto stub does. VERY BAD!.. means it's slipping!

Ditto that. If the PTO shaft is stopping, its unlikely there is anything wrong with the cutter.

And that tractor should have.pleanty of power to run a 6'cutter well.

How many hours on this tractor?

is the slip clutch on this model mounted at the tractor pto stub or back at the mower gearbox. I have seen some mowers with a torque limiter at the tractor side of the shaft, and tractor pto was fine, and clutch was slipping, so at first glance looked like pto shaft was dead.. but the stub itself was still turning if you look close.

Anyway. if the pto shaft is not turning .. the OP needs to quit wasting time doing things like checking gearbox oil.. and start investigating why the pto shaft ain't spinnin..
