My guess is you're using it as an old school single or twin carbon arc torch. Probably as a single carbon arc torch, putting a carbon rod in a stinger and using the coat hanger as filler.

I can't see any other way it would work.

I just re-read the original post and he says 12v machine, and not 12v battery. :confused2:

Sorry guys. It just started out as joke at work over that other welding thread. We built a trailer mover for my tractor with a hay spear to go on it. We started makin jokes about the thread.
The weld is 7018 made with a miller inverter running on 460 volts. The guy that made the weld is a helper that I'm working with on his welding.
I guess it was funny at the time and never meant to be serious. Besides coat hanger welds don't look that good.

:laughing: I was thinking what a good coat hanger weld that was. And I've seen a few done years ago by old farmers.
You'd have to look close to see if it was weld or something done by the old rooster.

There is a way to use coathangers for arc welding, it's what people used when they were just starting to experiment. This guy uses waterglass (sodium silicate) to keep the paper on the rods, but I've heard of those old-timers just using wet paper, too. Not as pretty as WH's buddy, though...

I have heard of that as well. Actually there was a thread somewhere on here about an American working in Nigeria, where the natives would steal chain link fencing to use as welding rod.

I'm sure it was; unless they use bare or painted fence in that part of the world. If we are talking about "Zinc Flu" I doubt they knew the difference. Maybe they rubbed it down with sand to remove it? Can't remember who posted it, but I know it was on TBN... the OP travel worked for oil companies around the world. I don't even remember what the thread was about, but that came up.
