So far I am pleased with the CREE 60w equivilents

If they last 10,000 hours I will only buy them.

Time will tell.

I have some of them outside. I really like them.

I have not tried their reflector for can lights...

Prices seem to vary across the country... anywhere from $12.97 down to $4.99 in Washington DC

Heck I'd even buy a product at wally world that was made in North America. Made in US would be a bonus!

We make a LOT of 2foot thru 5 foot (5 foot are a European lamp) in Ohio plant. If there is a florescent tube in that T8 or T12 in your shop/home chances are we might have made it... G:)

It seems as if:

"If you need it to survive, you are going to pay...much more, and it will never measure up to what you had"!

Insurance (speaks for itself)
Heating (EPA crackdown on woodstoves)
Gasoline (ethanol)
Lighting
Energy
Shelter
Food ( genetically modified)
Ohhh, and a job!

The halogen are not a new bulb. They have been around for many years. I like the LEDs that I have bought so far. Why do you not like the LEDs?

I'm the OP and yes, "new" means CFL's.

Ones that are supposed to last a very long time don't last near as long as the incandescent they replaced. They cost more and if you try to be responsible, are difficult to dispose of without a hassle. On top of that, they don't seem to put out enough light.

Now, when I started this thread I had not heard of LED's so I have learned something and would be willing to give them a chance.

If you're starting out with LEDs - its not an established industry. Quality varies. I bought a lot of junk before I learned what I needed.

From what I've seen only Cree and Phillips (more expensive) are building 'mature' product that simply does what you expect, and at a fair price.

Here's a Home Depot list of LEDs they sell
Search Results for*led bulb 60w*at The Home Depot

The customer comments on that page should be useful. Starting out I would get only 2700K bulbs, the color will be similar to incandescent. 3000K and above ('sunlight' color balance) seems like an unnatural glare for indoor lighting.

And good quality LEDs are so far only available (at a reasonable price) up to 60 watt equivalent. I expect this will improve each year.

I have some 60W Cree 5000K outside and they are put out more light than 60W Edison bulbs. I also like the 5000K color.

Home Depot has a nice selection of bulbs.

Another problem is I can't see with 60W bulbs. Am I supposed to put up a bank of them?

Reading a technical manual for three hours in the bathroom might raise concerns. How about 150W in the easy chair lamp so I can read, relax and maybe crack open a brewski? Lower lights produce shadows and make it difficult to read the fine print.

So we are about complete on turning our entire 50's house into all LED. I would say we will have $700 in on the turn over. Not cheap, probably not live long enough to see the return, but we did it anyway I would say I have returned well over 50% of the bulbs we bought due to color issues.

Right now I am waiting on my Candelabra bulbs to come in, hopefully they will fit this 50's atomic light fixture

As a final note, I bought this to go into a couch side lamp

FEIT PerformanceLED 32 Watt A23 Omni-Directional 150 Watt Replacement, A/OM2200R/LED, A/OM2200R/5K/LED | The EarthLED Store

It is huge, but it does put out the light. Works well under a lampshade. I have not noticed any ringing that some people complain about but my house is never quiet.
