Yanmar YM1500 and YM226
Hello Board,
I recently bought a used YM226. It has rear diamond turf tires already installed The tires on the front are Ag 3 ribbed 5.00-15. The specs I have seen say it should have 6-14 Ag ribbed tires.
I am not sure why it has the 5-15 tires in the first place.
Can a turf style tire be purchased for the existing rims?
Or do I have to buy new rims to fit new turf tires.
An online tractor parts supply house has rims and tires for $573 plus shipping and says they will be an inch shorter than my 6-14 stock tires and wheels. Am I going to end up too small for mowing?
I don't have an FEL so steering isn't a problem that I know of. I will be mowing for the most part.
Do I search local tire supply houses and do I just tell them that I have 5'' wide by 15'' diameter rims or does the 5.00-15 on the tire compute to another size altogether?
I hope I'm not asking a silly question. My ym1500 has 8.5/8.00-22 rear tires and I know that the rims are larger than 22''.
Any good places to look)
Thanks,
Torx

I don't think you will have much luck finding a narrow 15" turf tire, but you could use a car tire.Measure the diameter of the tire and look up 15" tire specs. They are all a little too wide, but will work.Example- a 155/60/R15 is 22.3"diameter by 6.1 wide.
You measure the diameter of a rim from bead seat to bead seat-don't include the lip.

Thanks. I have a questionable left front and hate dropping $600 for new rims and tires.
I'll check the website as there are some really close ones.
And a car tire or small trailer tire might be a good alternative as well.
Thanks'

5.00 - 15 farm implement tire is a reasonable alternative. Broad, smooth tread with grooves. And it will fit the same narrow rim as a 3-rib 5.00 - 15. I see them about $100 each on Ebay.

Is a farm implement tire designed for a farm implement like a hay loader or will they work as tractor tires? I hope this isn't a silly question.

They should work as well on a 2 wd tractor front as on an implement. You will probably use the brakes more for sharp turns on mushy ground but I wouldn't mow when its that wet anyway. This seems like a simple solution that keeps your existing 15 inch wheels.

5.00 - 15 tires was a factory HD option for my YM240. So that size was probably an option on YM226 too.

Rereading your first post ... 5.00 - 15 means the tire is 5 inches wide. Yanmar's rims for these tires are much narrower, I think 3 inches.

Hey Winston,
Thanks for the parts breakdown.
Do you know anyone who would sell a cheaper wheel than the John Deere Brand?

Hoye has the whole front turf set mounted and shipped for right at $600

No, I don't. You might try contacting a sure nuff tractor tire dealer and asking them that question. I think the 7jax14 is the main identifying number.

I think Winston and California's suggestions are great. I'll throw out an alternative, mostly so their options look better! I would be surprised if a rear motorcycle tire wouldn't mount up nicely. There are tires available that are rather close in size, and fairly affordable: Shinko SR567 Motorcycle Tire - BikeBandit.com These come in 120/70-15 for $44 apiece. This tire would be just under 22" tall, and not quite 5 inches wide. There are some other options that would vary the width and height, according to sidewall profile and so forth. Those tires are rated for 494 lbs, on a motorcycle, at well over 100 mph. The 5.00-15 tractor tires I first found on eBay are rated to 715 lbs.

I'm not advocating using motorcycle tires on your tractor instead of other things, but if you have a friend, neighbor, or other connection at a bike shop, and money is very tight, it may be worth your while to find out if you can scrounge a pair of tires from there. Especially if foam-filled, I really don't see that not working just fine, to be honest.

Wow 284 INTL.
Thats a great idea.
I have a good friend that works at a local Harley dealership and orders tools and parts for their service dept. Harley Davidson may not be a good source but he may know about cycle tires.
Next thing you know I will be looking at Cessna tires! (just kidding..Aviation tires are priced way out of my league.
Thanks,

Pretty much any tire will work, these tractors do not weigh that much. An implement like a hay bailer or something will be far heavier per tire than your tractor will be.

I personally would not drop $600 for a set of front tires and or rears as well. You could buy a whole tractor and swap the rims tires and recoup all or mos of your money, or search CL or call Hoye and see if thye have some used. There is a member here who has swapped out car tires and some sort of rim on his 1700 as well
