Pole Saws

Not to dampen the post, but I've used an extendable manual pole saw for years, and use it a lot. The blade is about 18 inches long and the extended pole will reach about 15 feet. No batteries, no cords, no motor....just me at 5'4'' and 145 pounds and 81 years old. This would be perfect for 45 minutes a year especially. I even stand on an 8 ft ladder mounted in the back of my pickup truck to reach even higher. ... Just an FYI for y'all.... I ain't bragging or selling anything.

You are certainly braver than I am.:) I'm only 66, but when I use my manual pole saw I have my feet planted firmly on the ground.

I've done the same for about 15 years and it worked perfectly for my needs, but with a persistent elbow problem, a powered one looks a lot less painful.

OK ... I have the old reliable "manual" pole saw myself. BUT ... I'm getting ready to tackle tree overhang surrounding 3 large pastures. Conservatively speaking, I will be cutting hundreds of limbs from 1" to over 6". I hope to regain multiple acres of hay by allowing better access to the perimeters when cutting/baling.

Bottom line, that's just too much for my old manual saw to bear! :)

This may be a 2 year project, as I hate to have all my fun at one time.
What is the best, most powerful, most user friendly, most reliable and maybe even affordable gas powered pole saw?

I would check out a stihl dealer

Best-yes (arguably)
Powerful-yes
User friendly-yes
Reliable-yes
Affordable...maybe not (depends on your definition)

I would Second the Opinion of going Stihl , Especially if you have dealer close by . If my trimming was any longer time per year , That is the route I would of went .

I'll add a third to the Stihl suggestion. I finally broke down and purchased one from a local dealer earlier this year. Not only did I quickly and easily get done what I needed this year (there'll be more next year), I also got the neighbors stuff done as well. Hmmm ... might have to think about that a little longer...

JT's response is similar to my plight , buying something more portable also means not only more work around my place but neighbors as well

I share OLDBALLS experience.

Stick Pole Saws are readily available at Loew's, Ace and Home Deport, which carry separate brands. It is worth your time to critically examine the inventory at the three venders.

Stihl makes a stick Pole Saw which is higher quality but costs more.

When you buy your stick saw buy a couple spare blades. In my experience, blades do not interchange between brands.
