This spring I replaced all the brake backing plates on my Loadmax 14k Gooseneck. 3 of the 4 have done great, but I have one brake backing plate that continually seems to keep heating up. I have adjusted them all the same and re-did the wiring to the suspect backing plate. I replaced all of them with AL-KO backing plates (it has AL-KO axles). The last trip, when it got hot, I disconnected the electrical to that brake that gets hot to see if the would stop the heat buildup. I drove awhile and then stopped again and it was still hot. The wheel spins free when jacked up, even when hot. The only way I can get it to stop heating up is to back the adjuster off all the way. I've done some internet searches, and came across some discussions about under-adjusted brakes causing heat build up. Seems counter-intuitive. I adjust the brake until wheel won't turn and then back off about 10 clicks. Any thoughts on the under-adjusted brakes or should I just buy a new backing plate and hope that it solves the problem? I've had it apart numerous times and can't find anything binding or unusual. Need to get it fixed before I blow a $120 trailer tire because it overheats from a dragging brake...:ashamed:

Thanks
Chris

I adjust by spinning till I find a slight drag then back it off 3 clicks.

That being said are you sure its not the bearings.

I don't back mine off 3 clicks, but I tighten mine the same way ,Till the wheel drags a little

I repacked the bearings this spring. I didn't see any issues with the bearings when I pulled them apart and cleaned them. The castle nut can be removed by hand.

I also don't think it's bearings becuase when I back the adjusters off all the way and disconnect the electrical, I don't get any heat breakup.
