Bird
Rest in Peace
Well Bird, one law that seems to have gone away shouldn't have, and I have no idea who got rid of it. Used to be, the State could only charge to drive on a toll road, until the cost of building that road was paid off, then it became a freeway again, with no tolls. Texas has sure been getting a lot of toll roads, the last few years, and I don't see any of them going back to being free to drive on.
The Dallas/Ft. Worth Turnpike (now I-30) was the first (or maybe only) one I know of to be built with that promise. I was still a teenager when they built it and I think they removed the tolls after 50 years. Now we're certainly getting more toll roads and I expect that trend to continue, but as for getting rid of the tolls . . . well, I'll be surprised if that happens. Some are being built with private funds and the builder is paid by receiving all or part of the tolls for about 50 years.
