florida 'fast lane' min speed law

Well Bird, one law that seems to have gone away shouldn't have, and I have no idea who got rid of it. Used to be, the State could only charge to drive on a toll road, until the cost of building that road was paid off, then it became a freeway again, with no tolls. Texas has sure been getting a lot of toll roads, the last few years, and I don't see any of them going back to being free to drive on.

The Dallas/Ft. Worth Turnpike (now I-30) was the first (or maybe only) one I know of to be built with that promise. I was still a teenager when they built it and I think they removed the tolls after 50 years. Now we're certainly getting more toll roads and I expect that trend to continue, but as for getting rid of the tolls . . . well, I'll be surprised if that happens. Some are being built with private funds and the builder is paid by receiving all or part of the tolls for about 50 years.

That's the problem. It was law that Texas build the roads, and then as soon as enough tolls were collected to pay for the construction, the road was no longer a toll road. I wonder who changed the law to allow private funds and builders do the building? Someone changed a law, and no one was told it was happening. Just more sneaky, back room dealings, by Gov't officials to line the pockets of their cronies, without a concern for anything else.

Well, I can't disagree with you, but now we may be getting into politics that aren't allowed on TBN except in the Friendly Politics forum.

OK. I wasn't referring to an actual person or party, just knew it had to come from Austin, just as the other laws being discussed are coming from their Capitals, as well. I wish I knew who to complain about though!

I wish GA had a law like Alaska does where if a vehicle has more than 5 cars behind it (in normal traffic conditions) they are required to pull over and allow the impeded traffic to pass... it is extremely frustrating to get behind an RV etc. traveling under the posted limit and applying their brakes on every minor turn or hill...

One of the reasons the Autobahn wroks so well.. Slow to the right and NO passing on the right. If a car is overtaking you, you MUST move over to the right unless traffic says otherwise, but then, no one would be going that fast :)

I also think that we should have to go through their driver training system over here. I think it takes, what 2 years to get a full license? With lots of classroom and hands on instruction. Getting a license is FAR too easy in NA. Let alone the old folks who have NEVER even taken the basic drivers test. You used to be able to get a license here just by having a neighbour (or a cop or something) sign a letter saying that youve been driving for "X" days. They never even had to be in the car with you a single time!!! Some of my family has those licenses. They are NOT good drivers in any way, shape or form.

Well, there are some very annoying drivers PASSING too.

In heavy traffic, where the left lane is moving at a reasonable clip, but more or less bumper to bumper as far as the eye can see, there are people who jump into the right lane to pass 2 or 3 cars on the right, then try to squeeze back into the left lane to pass the next truck in front of them.

If a traffic light backs traffic across the next side street, I'll stop so that I don't block the intersection. I've had someone pull into the center turn lane just to pass me so they can squeeze in front of me (and stop in the intersection).

Then, there was the guy behind me who decided to honk at me incessantly as I patiently waited for a fire truck to pass in front of me before pulling into the intersection.

I think we may have that here. The problem is that there are very few turn-outs that are designed to safely hit at 55 MPH, especially at 55 MPH in the dark. It wouldn't take much for the highway department to design better pullouts on the main thoroughfares.

I had a very hard time adjusting when I got back to the states from Germany. Everyone can learn something from the courtesy that is given on the roads in Germany. People will actually move over to the edge of the road on a two lane road to make it easier for you to pass over there.

I just saw a local TV news story about all the road construction going on in the north Texas area, and they mentioned that Dallas is the 22nd most congested city in the nation. It really surprises me if there are 21 more congested cities. I can think of 6 or 7, but 21???
