I'm leaning towards an L3800 purchase in the next few weeks and was wondering what the story is with this jerky PTO thing I keep reading about? Is there something specific I need to look out for at the dealer to avoid getting stuck with one of the bad ones? It seems like something a dealer would most likely take care of to complete a sale if it was caught and discussed before signing the papers.

Put a attachment on the 3 point and raise it, if it don't shake up and down your fine.

Mine jumps like crazy. I can probably bounce the front wheels off the ground with a 700 lb land plane on the back. Dealer says " it's normal" good tractor otherwise.

Mine jumps a bit if I raise fast, but if I go slow, its smooth.

My L3400 was just the opposite.. If I raised it slow it was very jerky, (more like a shudder) If I raised it fast. just one "bump" and the end when it stopped.
It was a pretty good tractor overall though. I don't own it anymore.

I've had my L3800 for almost a year now. The 3pt hitch isn't jerky at all, but it does move in 1/4" increments when raised very slowly. Very Smooth when raised any faster than Very Slowly. This isn't a problem at all to me and I would not have checked or ever noticed it, if I hadn't read about it here first.

BTW, I love the tractor and it has been better than I expected...

Yes, same experience with my L3700SU. When raising slowly it jumps in 1/4" increments, but its fine when raised quickly.

Yep, the PTO is pretty smooth on the L3400, just let that clutch out slowly:):)

Wasn't there a thread on how to fix the jerky 3PH?

I don't think they ever did. One guy tried to fix by changing hydraulics with a grand l but no worky.

I found a thread titled "Jerky Lseries 3pt hitch fixed." From what I read in that thread Kubota has superceeded the part number for the valve 3 times. So 3pts were fixed with a adjustment. I think some were fixed will a valve out of a L3010.

I have not heard anyone complain about the jerky 3pt recently so mabe the newer tractora don't do it.

Seems like the L3400 was the worst of the bunch. A couple guys here fixed, or got theirs fixed by internal adjustments. Only a handful of complaints out of many thousands of L models sold?

The 3PH operation was the first thing that I checked when I was looking at a L3400 on the dealer lot. Bought the tractor and the 3PH is as smooth as all get up. I'm guessing that it was a hit and miss issue with these tractors.(?) The L3400 has done everything that I have asked from it and very happy with it.

It only takes a few loud voices on the internet and it looks like an epidemic problem. ;)

Tell that to chilley
I just did. :D

There were some legitimately bad ones out there. I'm sure his is one of them.

But take the number of basic L models sold vs complaints and the problem was very, very small.

Yes, there were two fixes posted in case somebody's interested in searching for them. Fixes were also past on to Kubota and one involved an adjustment of some internal componant (escapes me right now). Maybe they actually listened and the new ones don't have the problem.
