How do you check to see that a stator/dynamo is working properly? The machine I just picked up had the wires unplugged from the harness and I think that it may have been unplugged for a reason. I do not want to get into cleaning and repairing only to have to go back and replace the unit. The waterpump appears to be circulating the coolant fine. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Gravity cooling system no water pump. I would start the engine and plug in the harness and check for voltage rise at the battery or if you have an amp gauge check it for amperage increase as the engine speed increases.

To build on what DW has posted. Speaking in general terms, at rest, vehicle battery voltage should be just over 12V. When the engine is running the charging system should be putting just over 14V across the battery.

After looking through the parts diagram....Huh no water pump. I guess that covers why it is said to keep the radiator clear of debris. My radiator has been repaired but does not leak as far as i can tell. The lower hose did pee all over the parking lot at the dealer which gave me more "negotiating" room on the price. He actually threw in two new hoses as part of the deal. After looking over everything when I got it home all I will probably need is a new fuel tank that I have already ordered. I also recieved 20% off on all parts needed on this because the previous owner kinda rigged some repairs. I was able to walk away with the tractor, 5' belly mower in execellent shape and 20% off on future parts for $2500 including sales tax (7% in Indiana). After a clean up I should have about $2650 in the machine.

Is the dynamo 2 or3 wired. It has been so long since I dealt with a 3 wire I don't remember which wires to check, but on the 2 wire at full throttle with it disconnected, it should generate 20-30 volts AC usually closer to the 30 volts. Make sure your voltmeter is switched to AC.

Also make sure the whistle works. That is the heat gauge.

They make a really nice mowing machine but do watch the rad for plugging up .

if the Dynamo requires removal pull the rads first. Then there will be one bolt on the dynamos that you will require a bent wrench or ratcheting combination wrench.
