Tractor
nothing
I have Claas Markant 55 square baler, to pull and run I need to buy a tractor with a 540 RPM PTO, and since it does not need much power to run, and because tractors are expenseve (Tractor price 30,000$), I thought of two ways:-

1- Engine with speed reducer 1,000$
to get an engine and connect a speed reducer to it's shaft to get 540 rpm, and put that motor with the speed reducer in my truck, and connect it with the baler shaft, pulling the baler by the truck.

2- Generator, two motors, speed reducers, steel, tire 4,000$
to get a generator on a simple car design (four weels with a steel beem), and two motors with a speed reducers, one motor for the baler and the other to be connected to the wheel of the car to pull the baler.

Did any budy do any of that before?

Why not purchase a used tractor for $5000 to $10000 and you will have something that you can use for other purposes as well.

I vote for number 1. But mount the motor on the baler. Of course adding some sort of governor to keep the rpm right. And adapting the baler to mount the engine and reducer. Don't forget some sort of clutch mechanism to reduce load at startup. And an overrunning clutch to protect the engine and reducer.

Um...... On second thought. If an older tractor is an option get one. Unless this is a quest to build. Then post a picture when your done.

Saljas,
It can be done but your estimation of the required power is way off. 55 requires 45HP/33kW. I don't know about any new $1000 engine that can produce such power. You could get a bigger engine including a gearbox from a junk yard though. Manual transmission four wheel drive power train might have the ratio to get about 540 rpm. Other option would be to put hydraulic pump on your pickup and hydraulic motor on the PTO input to the baler.

Surplus Center - 9.59 CU IN PTO DRIVE MOTOR Here is an example of a motor.

You will need about 13 cubic inches motor at 540 rpm and 30 gal/min; 113 L/min pump. The engine powering the pump should have about 90 HP to prevent bogging under the load. The advantage of the hydraulics is that you could use it to power other implements. I am not an expert on hydraulics so check the calculation here:

We ran a New Holland 68 baler for 40 years with a two cylinder Wisconson motor making 12 - 15 hp. Sat over the flywheel - connected with 3 belts and a lever clutch. Maybe this will help:
Viewing a thread - My old baler
I am surprised the Class takes that much HP to run however in my fields I would want a substantial tractor to handle it. We normally pulled the 68 with a Farmall Super H and once with a 9N on a level field just for kicks.
Bob

ps. that's not my baler but just like it.

Do what the Amish do... then you can just use horses!

Old Willey jeeps had PTO option, shaft in front and rear also. Does you truck trans have a PTO option, run a shaft out the back.

Older Jeeps with the channel frame didn't stand up well to the constant surging motion of a Wisconsin-powered baler.

There is no subsitute for a tractor, especially when baliing you should be right on top of the action.

can be done with a fifteen hp gas engine and belts. (if fly wheel is exposed) square balers have been self powered for years.

you may be able to rent a tractor,

Many thanks for your replys

To Roberthoting,
Many thanks for your reply
I am in Kuwait, Kuwait is a small country, we do not have a secound hand tractor market, I have to wait untill some one decides to sell his and buy it. Also imagine if one part goes wrong and I have to replace it, then I have to get it from out side the country. That is one week minimum without baling.

To RedNeck In Training,
Many thanks for your reply
You said Claas Markant 55 needs 45HP, do you mean 45HP tractor or 45HP engine that is hooked to PTO shaft?
If you mean 45HP engine that is hooked to PTO shaft, could you post the link that you get that info from, I think it is a good start.

I will submit more soon....

sorry about that, saljas. honestly did not even think to look at your location.

if you are pulling with a regular truck that is dedicated for bailer, you might be able to get some sort of HYD pump. that runs off the drive shaft, or some how mount a hyd pump under the hood. and connect hyd pump to the fan, alternator, a/c belt.

i have never paid much attention to how the hyd pumps on various trucks are mounted and connected, from dump trucks, to electrical pole handlers, to concrete mixing trucks, to other. they all normally have some sort of hyd pump on them.

I had a short contract job in Kuwait few years back. If I remember it right it was at Mina Al-Ahmadi refinery.

Saljas,

What kind of truck do you have? That may help us give you more and better suggestions.

If I was in your situation I would most likely make a "PTO power trailer" like show above like the Amish do in this country, and then pull with what ever you have that can pull it and at the correct speed, (my need a hand throttle, or a cruse control that is modified to work at low speeds, to work as as Governor for the pulling unit.)

Amish Baling Hay With Horses Arthur Illinois - YouTube

many early balers in this country had a engine mounted on the baler as many tractors did not have PTOs then, so mounting the engine directly on the baler and the reduction drive could be a possibility as well,

the thing with the power trailer is that one could power other PTO equipment you may come across as well, and add some hydraulics to the cart as well so one can do more with it,

some of them drove the fly wheel directly using the fly wheel as a pulley, the engine had a hand clutch on it, to disengage the engine from the unit, (one would need some type of clutch on a power trailer as well, Newholland 282 Hay Baler | Tractor Implements

I have seen some bailing rigs, made from old one and half ton trucks or two ton trucks, usually shortened up and an additional transmission for lower gears, (could be a transfer case out of a 4 wheel drive) and then some made a PTO that would drive off the front of the engine and was then shafted to the rear of the rig for the PTO,

the thing the baler guys liked it has suspension, and had road speed, as well, (if all else failed you could mount a motor for power the bailer on the truck bed or frame,

this is an example of a home made tractor like I was talking about, some used the truck cab, Ford | Flickr - Berbagi Foto!

the motor driving the baler will need some type of Governor on it and most likely the pulling unit will to,

Many thanks for your reply,
I also do not think it will take that much HP.
The picture you sent is what I was looking for, so it can be done. Does it spin directly while staring or is there a power separator?
In other words, Is the baler spinning while starting the engine?
