Does not look like chains held... Truck hauling trailer with water truk on it, rear ended by another truck. Water truck look like it broke loose and ended up over the trailer tongue.

if the chains had held the driver of the truck probably would be waiting on a hearse not a tow truck.

I don't think chains are ever designed to prevent load shift during an accident. The forces involved in an accident are multiples of the weight being carried. The chain needed would be much larger.

I don't think chains are ever designed to prevent load shift during an accident.

They should prevent the load from shifting or flying away from the truck/trailer if there is a minor accident.

For example, I'm sure we've all seen multi-car wedge trailers wrecked and cars thrown all over the place at least once, and if the rig rolls down a big hill or hits an overpass at high speed, bad stuff is going to happen; but those cars shouldn't get ejected from the trailer because of a fender-bender, locking up the brakes, etc.
