cartod, interesting idea to camouflage the camera.

As I read through these replies, some remind me of one of the episodes of "two and half men" Where Jake is really cranky for the whole show and everyone is trying to figure out what is going on. Finally at the end of the show Berta has him drink a big bottle of prune juice and then everything is fine. :D :D Some people take life just to seriously.

I quit using cams over a year ago as i don't have time anymore. But when i did have cams i had the remote storage and the normal cams, but for them all I placed inside an older large tree, I cut a box into the tree with a chainsaw, place the cam inside it then ran a chain around the tree with small grooves so the chain cannot be slid up nor down covering the box padlocked of course, also cut box inside tree and placed lags In front just barley touching the cam.

I usually place a no hunting sign over them with a hole for the camera and caught many people never noticing them (mostly neighbors just mushroom hunting or crossing through they had permission) but did catch 5 trespassers 4 of them were all the same routine time. Witch the had the cops waiting for them the next time they came through. 5th only saw once but he had been hunting and was heading towards main road Must been lost.

the cams cannot be removed unless you had a impact drill, chainsaw, and/or torch. I've only had one cam stolen as it was a smaller tree someone cut down, cam stolen with the chain, and they took the wood.

i've always been partial to:

KEEP OUT!
Trespassers will be violated

but on a just slightly more serious note... back in the 90's i worked in england for a while. i went to reposition a computer slightly just to make better room for the keyboard and mouse, but i found that i couldn't move the computer. after asking about it i was told that theft is incredibly high in that area, and the thieves will break in a window and drag out anything they can, so literally everything that can be bolted down is bolted down. they had to secure everything to the walls, desks and floors. they even lined all the tall filing cabinets up in a row in front of the windows to try to stop them from breaking in, and it was a second floor office. i asked about resale of stolen goods and they said anything stolen was likely just destroyed. senseless theft here was far less than there. not that it helps out out in any way, but i don't think we've become any worse than anywhere else in the world.

i do not remember brane name right off, but they do make SD cards, that automatically send photos to a wireless router, pending on software, that comes with the SD card, it uploads to your computer or internet. problem is you are limited to 300 feet or so from the wireless router.

on a different note, you can pick up "long distance" repeater / router. and setup a solar charger and battery for repeater / router. for a 1 mile. but can be costly venture and need straight line of sight between things. if i had the spare cash, i have been tempted to setup this up for a cabin back on the farm. and run things off generator when back there.

i suppose you could get WISP (broad band internet) wireless internet service provider. not through a phone company. but limited to a tower in your area and direct line of sight of that tower. and setup some sort of solar panel and car battery and converter. and setup a wireless router with a wireless SD card.

if you setup a long distant repeater/router. you could buy wired or wireless network cameras and install some sort of security software on computer that stays on all the time. to adjust when and what spots that camera see, to start recording video or take picture.

=======================
everything above is complicated and can get expensive fast. as in not 100's but 1000's of bucks.

game cameras with remote storage / black box. personally would prefer to have. setting up the camera in a good spot may mean placing it high, or in a place with there is a bunch of brushes and nasty to walk into or get up to. to remove the SD card to get pictures. a black box could be set some place easier to get the SD card.

perhaps....if you had a wireless SD card. you could plug in a 12V to 110V cigerate lighter converter in vehicle. along with laptop and router. download pictures right there in your vehicle. and only needing to go out and change batteries.

==================
for hiding cameras, the wasp nests / mud divers. you might find them at antique stores or craft / hobby stores.

I don't have a cam yet (only at my place a all too few weeks out of the year), but was thinking of setting up a cam in a hollowed out log. We have a lot of old trees that have been worked over by woodpeckers, so recreating one that had a woodpecker 'like' hole, and an access hatch in the back, seems doable.

Boeing,
I don't understand how a cable lock was untouched and left behind and still locked/wrapped around the tree and the game camera was gone. On my Reconyx, the cable lock runs through the GC so you would have to destroy the GC to remove it. I do also keep the GC locked inside a camo steel bear box which is lag screwed into one of my trees making that now two locks and four lag screws to get to the GC inside. Quite simply, a gun, tree limb, rock or whatever applied will kill a GC but not necessarily steal it. It really comes down to being hidden from the human eye.

wedge40, yes, I guess I'm one of those that you have described so I'm off to the store for a case (perhaps several for future posts) of prune juice and by the way in your post, it's not "to", it's "too" (adverb) seriously.

If their intent was to hide who they were and what they were doing, then they could have smashed it and hauled off the pieces to hide the evidence rather than to steal the camera for its value.

IMHO, this sounds most likely the reason..My son has lost a couple cameras on the land he leases...I plan to buy the steel box and mount mine high..
