I think more of a worry should be the garbage that Diesel fuel has become.
I would find and buy a good fuel "LUBE". Given all else equal, the fuel is the great unknown, and as the EPA sues everyone in sight, I expect it to get worse..more like ethanol.. ewwww
be thankful we dont have to run afterburners like big rigs, and stack temp in the thousands..

Yes I expect that over time the price will rise steadily year on year and the quality will go down and the government will make things worse not better. Other then changing fuel filters and perhaps installing an in line water separator if it doesn't already have one I don't know what more an operator can do.

add automatic tranny fluid or a good additive.

Add ATF to your diesel fuel?? That's a new one to me. I'd have to think long and hard on that before I'd dare try it especially in a brand new tractor. Might be a great idea but I just don' know.

We used it all the time on the farm. It lubricates well and the detergents clean the fuel system. Never tried it on a common rail, but it did wonders for the old allis chalmers and ford trucks.

How much ATF do you add to a tank of fuel?

Thanks for the info. Something to think about. Can you smell the smoke?:)

My tractor still rolls coal and gives off the diesel smell whether I use Power Service diesel additive or not. I do seem to get a little better mpg though and slightly better throttle response when I use it. I mostly use it because I'm scared of putting crappy fuel into my $20,000 tractor. More of a peace of mind thing then anything else.

Are you using red dyed off road fuel/ heating oil or road taxed truck stop diesel? And would your JD see a difference between them?

I use off road 90% of the time and on road the other 10%.

Personally I would not run ATF in my fuel. I run Schaeffer's Oil brand in my tractor and the truck, so far the results look good in the truck. The tractor is actually too new to tell a difference.

A fuel additive isn't going to make it stop blowing black smoke. If it is blowing too much, then it may be running to rich.

On another note, my dealer warned me that next year the tractors will start having some sort of pollution control added to them.

I hear that to. Tier 4 it is called and will make new stuff cost quite a bit more and make them stop making some engine models that can't be tuned enough to comply. It will make anything you have that is in good condition that much more valuable and you will have to recalculate how far you will go on repairs before trading for new is cheaper. I don't know if the GOP would hold off on those rules if they win in November or not.
