True. Since I bough the Woods 1050 from a local farmer, the deere dealer has no skin in the game. Yet he tells me not to worry. Why would he do that if there was a chance that this 6000 lbs breakout force hoe would tear up the tractor?

My sales guys has been doing this for 20 years and everyone at this dealership comes to him when they can't figure something out. I tend to take his advice. I should get something in writing I suppose.

I do not want to crack my 5085M in half! Then again, I might just be done with all the heavy duty stuff by the time if finally shows up!

That's more breakout force than the 595 hoe has...

I can certainly respect both the experience your salesman has - as well as your working relationship with him. Nonetheless, I'd want it in writing!

As a side note - I'd venture that even with more than 20 years of selling equipment - JD or others; he's probably only seen a handful of backhoes on farm tractors.

Wouldn't guess that the failure or damage would be nearly so catastrophic! More likely would be that you'd break or crack the top link bracket and maybe damage the mounting holes in the transaxle housing.

Or damage the lower 3pt lift link attachment on the transalxe housing. That could be bad but not fatal - it's "only" money - after all.

'Course you could always use the money from selling the backhoe to rent an excavator for those stumps! :D

I'd bet you could do those 2 acres in a weekend. No problem! JD 120 or JD 160 with thumb.

pclausen;

You've got an awesome shop and all those goodies to go with it! Do you have a plasma cutter to go along with that air compressor? :D

Spent some browsing time lookin' at the JD 595 backhoe.. It specs out very closely to the JD 110 backhoe.

I also noted that it has a sub-frame mounting system. Couldn't find any pics of the mount, though. Of course, the Deere brochure mentioned the superiority of the mounting system versus the 3pt attachment and focused on "frame stresses".

I'd be very suspect that Deere would stand behind any repairs that might be necessary if the backhoe use were to damage your new $70,000 tractor!

The regional sales rep might have a different opinion than your dealer salesman...

Nice shop he has, Looks way better than mine. All I got are a 2 Gallon air compressor and a bigger dual tank one thats probably about 20 gallons. I may want to get a big one like yours. Good to power my chevron grease bin/barrel. If I have time I could get a picture of it for you guys. I bought it at an auction for 400 dollars. Comes on wheels and everything. No need to get those small 14 ounce tubes. A metal cutter, a Miller Millermatic 252 welder. Some wood cutting gear and bought about 2500+ pounds of steel one day for real cheap I think it was under 500 bucks at an auction. My liftgate on my Hino could barely handle it. The thing is loud when empty and it was quite as a Swiss watch!

pclausen, your tractor almost costs more than mine. How about you trade me your new 5085M for my 5420? Sounds like a deal right? I do need a new loader tractor. What transmission did you get for your 5085M? Maybe we can put together a race one day. My 6430 and your 5085M? Sounds like a deal? Winner takes both? :D

So I finally took the plunge and got a factory fresh 2012 5085M on the way.

It will be equipped with the following factory options:
  • MFWD (4 Wheel Drive)
  • 16F/16R PowrReverser Transmission - 540/540E
  • Electrohydraulic (EH) with remote LH fender control
  • 420/85 R34 R1W Radial (Michelin Agribib)
  • 13.6R24 125A8 R1W Radial (Michelin Agribib)
    . . .

I opted not to get the side mirrors and will instead get a rear camera with a monitor.

I also will start out with no liquid ballast in the rears and see how things work out. . .
I'm excited!

You're gonna love that tractor!!!

MFWD will make a huge difference with things like loader work, pulling plows, etc.
Great transmission setup.
E/H hitch is the best thing since sliced bread.
Radials give better traction, smoother ride, longer life, etc. What's not to like?

Can't imagine not having the dual side mirrors, but I've never tried the camera. You can always add the mirrors later.

I don't think you will need ballast. I haven't yet.

You should be exited. Enjoy. :D

Pulled the bucket off the Woods backhoe. . .

It needs a pair of new teeth. Previous owner used it without the outer teeth in place. Grrr. I'm going to take it to the JD dealer tomorrow when I pick up the 6405 loaner!
It will most likely need to have the two outer shanks replaced, or at least built up (by welding). If not, you won't be able to keep teeth on them. The middle ones might be OK, but the teeth that are on them are upside down.

I got the 6405 home safely. That's probably the heaviest load I've hauled with my truck. It seemed to handle it fine although it makes my truck look tiny in comparison.

6405-1.jpg

It got a wide stance too!

6405-2.jpg

Here's the hitch. Overall it looks pretty beefy I think.

6405-4.jpg

Unfortunately the left stabilizer bar is bent/broken.

6405-5.jpg

The right one is missing completely, even the bracket that goes on the axle is gone. The linkage arm is also real loose because a bolt was used instead of the correct lock pin thingie.

6405-6.jpg

The EH hitch doesn't work (circled in red)

6405-7.jpg

And even using the manual override (circled in red) didn't allow me to lower the linkage at first. Had to use a big pry bar to get the left cylinder going. I guess it had gotten stuck from sitting.

6405-8.jpg

Unfortunately, the EH hitch still doesn't work. I checked the fuse and that was good. Guess I'll check that the solenoid is okay. There are 4 wires going to it. I'll check for voltage on the connector when operating the EH control.

Being able to finally lower the 3pt hitch, I proceeded to hook up the backhoe.

6405-9.jpg

From a distance. I took the bucket to the dealer. He's going to put 4 new heavy duty teeth on it.

6405-10.jpg

I'm going to gather up the part numbers needed to fix the stabilizer bars and such. I don't think I'll want to operate either the backhoe nor stump grinder without those in place.

I went for a short drive around the property, and this 6405 is quite a tractor compared to my 4700! The rears are filled, so this thing is probably is over 10k lbs with the loader. Radio, AC and heat all appears to be working.

All very valid concerns. I too noticed that the breakout force is higher than the 595, which of course use a sub-frame. I was going to get a mini ex down the road, but then this Woods 1050 showed up on Craigslist literally next door for a real good price, so I jumped on it. Once I get the hitch on the 6405 fixed up and start pulling stumps, I'll decide if I want to put it on my 5085M or not. I hope to be done with stump well before the M shows up!

I got the 16/16 PowrReverser.

As for the race, how about I bring my other "M"? :D

Is that even yours.., Well if it is, No. :D And if it isn't still No. :D

My neighbor (competitor) has a 6405 and its junk. Same tires as my 6420 and the dealer would take it for under 20k. The other stabilizer bar bracket isn't there because its an option not a give me. No top-link for the tractor? Looks a bit strange without the top link. :confused2: And if this 6405 was yours I would try to be a bit nicer and say "some nice" complements on it like, how it has a nice single rear work light. And how "nice" that 3 point hitch looks like *cough* not really *cough*....

Lol, it's mine alright. Here it is in the shop:

Good to know. I guess I'll just get the correct pin to replace the bolt and the bent end link on the stabilizer bar that did come with it.

There's a top link, I just took it off as it is not used with the backhoe.

LOL! Yeah, I think I'll be real pleased moving from this loaner to my 5085M when it gets here.

Nice ride, how much does it cost? It sounds like your a rich boy. Looks the same amount for a brand new Kenworth T-370 that might come into my line up (75k) for cab and chassis. Reefer and refrigerated body and column lift are a different story.. The body would be around 25k + Reefer is under 20k. Column lift is around 12k. So its a pricey truck to drive around. If I get a $25k body that's only 24 foot and I'm thinking 28 6' +

That tractor looks like a dogs breakfast.... Honestly it's terrible.
