I have been looking at atv's and side x sides for a couple of months now, I think I have narrowed my choices down to three s x s's , the polaris ranger xp 800, the ranger 500 le or the Kawasaki teryx 750 se. I will be using this machine probably 50% for working on my property and 50% for trail riding.
I would love to hear some reviews good or bad about peoples experiances with any of these machines. I have tryed out the teryx and liked the ride and the layout of the machine but I havent. Een able to try either of the polaris's.............Craig

I have a 2008 Ranger 700 with efi. Added the winch (fits front and rear 2" common hitch. I use it only for work, (pulling firewood trailer, snowplowing, sugar bush ops), It is very strong but I have had some serious problems. The front gear box needed replacement, Polaris tires (made by Carlisle) are not as durable as they need to be for work, speedo, carb sensor, parking brake. It does very well, good traction and pulls very well, rated for 1000 lbs in box, pulls 2000lbs. Work box has flat deck, (no wheel humps) which may not bother most if you do not use pallets. Not sure how it would compare with other models, many new makes out there these days. Good luck.

Kioti Man,

I'm venturing away from your three top picks just to think out of the box. I have the 2011 Kubota RTV 900 xt, but if you plan to play 50% of the time I don't recommend it. I'm one that dislikes the CVT drive. With that said only the Kubota and Honda offer a non-CVT drive. Honda is like most having a great deal of plastic.

If I were buying a CVT drive unit, the John Deere 825i would be the selection. Good machine! Down south the John Deere dealers are normally great. I have five John Deere tractor and other implements. If I break or wear out a JD part, the JD dealer will have it tomorrow if they don't have it on the shelves today. That speaks volumes to me.

If you want to fly on wheels, seek out the CanAm 1000. They have different ignition keys that set the max speed limit from 25 mph up to 100 mph. Sounds like a death trap to me.

Good luck.

If I was picking from those three, the Ranger XP would be mine. Since it's in your name, don't forget Kioti just came out with a new pretty slick side by side of their own. Geared a little more towards work, but worth a look if you'd like to stay with your orange:thumbsup:

Thank's for the reply's guys,I used to race Polaris snowmobiles so I am very comfortable with cvt clutches and I have a good relationship with a couple of Polaris dealers.
As far as the mechron( Kioti) goes it looks like a great unit for all work but I think I would find it a little too "utilitarian" for trail riding.
Thanks again for the reply's and keep them coming......Craig

Since I have no experience with the models you mention, I'm going to suggest some others.

If you want a trail UTV and a work UTV, my bias for JD aside, I think the Gator 825i is one of the best. 50HP automotive style engine, 44 MPH and the largest cargo capacity of any UTV. Worth a look if nothing else.

Good luck on your search!

I really don't think you can go wrong. All have great options.

Good luck.

Given your 50/50 usage mix, I'd recommend the Teryx unless you REALLY must have the additional payload of the Ranger XP. Several factors that would lead me to that recommendation:

1. The Teryx has much higher build quality, overall. Check fit and finish, quality of fasteners, size/strength of frame and suspension members, etc.

2. The Teryx bucket seats are MUCH better for trail riding unless you need the "3-wide" seating of the Ranger bench. You simply slide around too much on that bench, requiring the seat belt to hold you in position, when riding for a long period. After a while, that seat belt gets uncomfortable...

3. IMO, the Kawi is a much more reliable machine... based upon my time around Polaris products. Perhaps the Ranger is more reliable than the RZR, but overall I'm not impressed by their reliability. Their performance, yes - their reliability, no...

This coming from a Rhino 450 owner... who also has about a 50/50 mix. The smaller Ranger would only get my nod if money were a primary decision factor... With the Yamaha's at least, the different gearing of the 450 gave it similar low speed performance of the bigger-engined machine. I don't think that's quite as true for the small Ranger...

Well yesterday I wen't traveling around and looked at a bunch of different models.
I like the power of the 800 ranger ,but it really is a big machine, maybe to big for a lot of the places I ride.
I really liked the 500 ranger LE in sunrise red, its a sharp looking machine. The power seems comparable to the 800 until 40 mph then the 800 powers away, having said that the 500 goes 45 which seems like enough for trail riding.
Now the hard part picking and paying for my choice.
The ranger 800 LE is $12,700+ 13%
the ranger 500LE is $10,300 +13%
the New non current 2011 teryx sport LE is $12,200+13%.
If it was the same price as the small ranger the Teryx would be my first choice,in fact I am going to make that offer to my dealer, I have nothing to lose.
In the likely event that he tells me to go fish I beleive I will be buying the 500 ranger.(unless of course i find more money hiding in the couch, then I will buy the 800 and carry my saw to make the trails wider).
On another note I took a look at the new John Deere XUV 825i, what a sweet looking machine, this is not your Grampa's Deere...........Craig

Oh, I almost forgot I went and looked at Can-Am Commanders as well. Holy Cr$& ,those things are wicked, they come with a seperate valet ignition key that lowers the top speed to" only" 44 mph they are supposed to go over 70 with the regular key........ Oh my..... Imagine hauling in firewood with one of them... Too cool.....craig

You see the price tag on that thing? Talking 17/18 grand, really nice for running the trails but not alot of room in the bed.

Sounds like that Kawasaki dealer is quoting your MSRP on a non-current machine. That's the MSRP on a new 2012 LE -- though I don't know if there was a price increase between 2011 and 2012, though I'd think so.

You might want to compare prices from another Kawi dealer nearby -- and take that info with you when you talk to this dealer about his non-current one.

I bought my Rhino as a non-current machine -- but I basically paid dealer cost, not MSRP, to get it off his floor-plan. You should be able to beat that quoted price by $1500 or more, I'd think. I did...

we have an Teryx and we love it, we didn't really need it, more wanted it. biggest thing for me was buckets vs bench seat more comfortable in play mode, not as handy as a bench for work mode. try to prioritize what you want it for most. you will most likely use it more than you think you will.

Kent, i just looked at my copy of the MSRP listings for Ontario where I'm located and the Teryx sport le ( silver) list price is $ 16,399, lime green$16,099,and the base model in red lists for$14,499.
I know my dealer bought a bunch of these from his district rep because he didn't have any of these until Christmas. He cleared all the base model ones out for $9999 + pdi andfrt.......Craig

No problem, our border may only a foot wide when your crossing it ,but it adds 25% to the cost.
If I had time I would be further ahead to go across the border into New York or Michigan and buy there....Craig

Of the machines you have mentioned, I would think the Ranger 800 would be the top choice. I agree, in my running of smaller displacement Rangers v. the 800 I owned, there did not seem to be much difference in performance until one hit the higher speeds/RPM's. That said I really like the Polaris 800 EPS unit. One must also think about power steering as it equates to resale; though many of us think we will keep a machine forever we usually don't. I feel that power steering will become commonplace among the higher end UTV's within the next 3-4 years, so might as well consider it now (it is really awesome, too). My only problem with these side by side sport/work UTV's is the tiny cargo box many of them have. They just will not hold hardly anything, making many of these models just toys, really. If what one wants is to sport ride all the time, that's OK, but for those of us who truly do mixed duties it is much easier to put 400 pounds in a box capable of 1000 than to put 1000 pounds in a box meant for 400, if you follow. Of the models you mention, I believe than Ranger has the largest box capacity. As stated by another poster, I would look at the 825I Gator. I do not like the ergonomics as much as I did my Ranger and had to add the power steering kit, but it in my opinion is a stronger and better-made machine (not to say my Ranger was bad--just not at the level of the 825). I know that we all have our favorites and why we buy what we do all boils down to personal preference, but assuming dealer support for you locally is similar, the Ranger 800 EPS and the Gator 825I for true mixed-duty usage (50/50 work and play) are really tough to beat. I am not trying to steer you toward things I have owned, aside to say that is why I have owned them (that I thought they offered a good package). I spent a great deal of time and have tested out/operated several of the UTV's discussed to contribute to my conclusions. If you really are wanting something for just fun and might carry a light load every now and then and do not plan to plow much snow, etc., then I would go with the machine that gives me the highest horsepower I can afford, as they are all otherwise fairly equivalent, aside from those two mentioned. There is no perfect UTV; there have been things I have liked and disliked about each one I have had. To me, it is just a matter of the least compromise for your intended use. Again, of the ones mentioned as your choices especially with your background with Polaris snow machines, there is not much question what would find its way into my garage.

I really appreciate all the responses that I have gotten so far, they have been great for at least getting me to ask myself the right questions. Why do i want this machine? How will I use this machine? How much am I willing to spend?how
much are extra features ( EPS,nice paint, alloy wheels etc) worth to me?
Now I guess its time to see how good a deal I can make. ....... Craig
