Guys,

I am looking for ideas here.

I have a ton of downed timber I am harvesting for 2 reasons, Fire wood and Fence posts.

I am keeping all straight 7' long 4" minimum width for fence posts, the rest is fire wood.

So how do I manage to carry my chain saws, etc. to and from wherever I am cutting (mostly from, when the bucket/grapple is full of wood, where do i put the saw & stuff)?

Thanks in advance,
David

I took some years working out my wood systems. But it was in answering your same questions that drove me to it.

You can strap a box/basket to whatever you have on the 3PH for ballast.

ShortGame,

Seriously? DBF Pin!!! DUDE!!! My Bubblehead Brother GOOD to meet you sir!

I was on SSN 675, USS Bluefish.

I'm a Pacific NW'er by birth (Oregonian). I don't miss the drizzle though...

NICE wood handling process too!

I like RRR's idea about using my ballast as a hauler of some sort. K0ua has something similar with his homebrew ballast box but it is not for chainsaws...

Thanks for the pics, lots to learn from there.
Be well!

I use a receiver hitch with 2 inch ball. I have a trailer made from the bed of a full size dodge pickup with a large toolbox on front of the frame.I transport the logs on my FEL. Since green wood weighs more than seasoned, I cut some firewood in the field and have plenty of room in the trailer for kindling cut from the branches. Everything is kept somewhat separate making unloading and stacking a breeze. Happy Tractoring.:tractor::tractor:

I would LOVE an old pickup bed trailer...
Nice setup!

Happy Tractoring indeed!

Some ideas;

- add a 2" receiver hitch and cargo hauler or pull a trailer
- add a carry-all with custom box for firewood and tool storage
- customize your ballast box to hold stuff

Not exactly your situation, but I built my carryall with a removable shelf/seat on top to carry chain saw, tools, refreshments, etc. However, I found that when I am clearing brush and want to pile the brush in the carryall to move it, the top shelf has to go.

If I throw the saw and gas in the carryall, the brush winds up piled on top and I have to keep digging my saw out. So, I also fabbed up a "tractor tub" that goes into the receiver hitch of the carryall. That way, the saw and gas can ride in their own compartment, separate from the brush in the carryall. If I really want to carry a lot of stuff, in addition to the wood, I hang my utility trailer on the back of the carryall via the receiver hitch.

Don't call me SIR!

I was born in Bethesda Naval (my dad was a secret code hacker chief warrant) in 1947, two years after the keel was laid for my future home, and itself a future GUPPY III.

Not to fancy but I can carry 2 saws and all my stuff. A bracket bolted across the rops. A piece of plywood bolted to that and laying on my flat fenders. And a milk crate.

Attached are photos of some of my DK35 modifications. The idea for the right side saw holder and chain holders are from a post by tornadowatchranch in the Bobcat thread:

http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/bobcat-tractors/190625-335-chain-chainsaw-holder.html#post2177322

The saw holder is a sandwich of three plywood pieces mounted to the existing holes in the loader frame. The chain holders are 4" ABS pipe bolted to a piece of plywood which was attached to two new holes in the metal frame holding the plexiglass.

The left-side 3" ABS pipe is for carrying longer items such as a rake, long-handled shovel, axe, log lifter, etc. The brackets are from a 6" corner brace (one is shown on the platform for reference) twisted with a crescent wrench and mounted to the existing loader mount holes plus a small tapped hole.

My dealer made the brackets for the left-side loader arm and they are tapped into the underside of the arm. I also added a small brace to one of the existing loader pin retainer bolts. The brackets are useful for carrying bulkier items.

There is also a small bracket (dealer made it too) on the left rear left side cross member which I originally intended for chains but did not work that well. However it is useful for temporarily carrying lynch pins, etc., or the clevis (as shown).

I removed the flashing lights from the top of the fenders because it was just a matter of time until I tore them off in the bush. I ran a piece of angle iron between the freed-up brackets and hang odds and ends from that.

Keep it simple. I like that!

PS - If your tractor had anymore chains on it in that picture it would be Goth...

Be well sir!

Methinks Irene may just be sound and fury signifying nothing in the end.

My local forcast is down to 22-25 mph winds, 2" rain.

Heck, the T-Storm on Friday had more wind.

I will enjoy the tractor seat time regardless.

Be well sir!

What type of wood are you saving for fence post?

MarkV

Good question:thumbsup:

I cant help much with the transporting issue, buy you may want to re-think these fence posts. Unless you are clearing a loctus or hedge grove. Or unless you want all the posts rotted and on the ground in 2-years flat.

LD1,

I am using hardwoods. The plan is to dip them in a tar/sealant mixture, let them dry and then put them in the ground. People around me say this is good for 7-10 years. I will be making changes within that time i expect.

Also I can get a great loan on a tractor, but not so great on fence posts, so... I'm conserving my cash for now. I got LOTS of wood...

Do yourself a favor and buy treated fence post....The ones we put in are good for 30 years. Why are you messing with something that going to last maybe 7 years or less? That is a blink in the eye.

I noticed guys on all your threads are talking you into buying a crap load of equipment you don't need. Easy to spend someone else's money I guess. Guys are telling you to buy all kinds of expensive logging equipment and farm attachments. They are spending your money like gov't burecrats. One guy was telling you to buy an expensive gadget to pick up logs...buy a $50 set of logging chains and drag the darn things out of the way

You are buying a bunch of $$$ crap you don't need but skimp on the fence-which is hard manual labor to put in and it takes coniderable amount of time. Spend the money right, plan your fence and do the fence job right the first time. You have 50 acres to take care of.

You don't have the time(and wait until your energy level drops off) to do jobs twice...you will find that out. Wait until the luster of taking care of 50 acres wears off....

Here's what I use, a heavy homemade 3pt carryall with sides, it holds just about anything and doubles as balast, just through in a few 5gal buckets and fill them with what ever you need
