But,

I just did the 50 hr. service on my L3800. The manual says the oil capacity is 7.5 qts. I drained and changed the filter, added 7 qts, ran the tractor, checked for leaks and let it set while I changed the other filters. When I pulled the dipstick, it was an inch over the full mark. I ran it some more and topped the tranny off. Let it sit overnight and it was still showing overfull.
Anyone else see this problem? I did drain out about 3/4 qt. to get below the full mark.
I did drain both sides of the oilpan.

Manual for my L3940 calls for an 8.7 quart engine oil capacity. After pulling both drain plugs and sitting overnight, my refill is 8.0 quarts to full line. May be difference between dry fill and oil change re-fill??? Don't worry, just go off of stick. Check that your next oil re-fill is 7 quarts too. Philip.

I am glad I came across this thread as I had a similar experience. Changed the transmission oil in my L2800 and wound up having to drain a couple of quarts after I checked the bubble and saw that it was completely filled. I also had the same experience with my RTV. The refill was less for both the transmission and auxiliary dump bed. I guess you don't go by capacities but what it takes to get back to the fill indicators. I could of saved some $$$$ by buying less of that liquid gold Kubota calls SUDT.

I have run into this too, so I just go by the dip stick.

Call me ****, but for transmissions, axles, gear cases, etc (not engines), before I drain, I check that case is at full level. I then drain, then measure fluid. I then add quantity of what was drained out, then check level there. I have changed way too many automatic transmissions only to find out I put too much in, and what a pain to drain a little out. Philip.

Copy that, when in doubt, i measure what came out too. Then add the approx. amount and go with the stick. Much easier than sucking some of it out..

I had just the opposite experience with my BX. Manual says 3.7 qts and I ended up using between 4 and 5 to get to the mid level on the dipstick.

Same here, just did the 50 hour last weekend and have an extra quart of engine oil (I always stop one quart shy of the recommended capacity and check, even in my cars and trucks) It didn't bother me, but I did wonder where the "extra" might be hiding.....

Okay, let's move forward to Sept 10, 2012. I have an IH 384 diesel model which call for 9 quarts of oil for a refill. I changed the filter and drained the oil and put 8 quarts back in. I checked the oil level on the dipstick and it measured about an inch over the full mark. I found this post after much searching to see what others with similar experiences have done. I went to a dealership and spoke with the parts clerks who checked their books and found that the capacity was 8.3 quarts w/o filter change. I was asked if the dipstick was the correct one for the tractor and I told him that I didn't really know because the tractor was bought used. He said that he could sell me one for fifty dollars or put a mark on the dipstick where the full level is now and use that mark as the new fill level. When I bought the tractor the oil fill level was to the mark on the dipstick. I put about forty hours on the tractor and decided to change the oil after it had become really black. I am going to check with one other tractor dealership service department for their input and then make a decision on what to do. Glad you fellow tractor owners posted this.

I have an L3200 and I recently changed the Hydraulic oil after buying the 7.5 gallons of UDT it calls for. I only used 6 gallons because to my suprise there is not just 1 drain plug...there are two more on the rear axle housings that hold about 2 gallons which cant drain out of the one main drain plug because they are lower than that drain plug is. I found out later (looking on you tube) that another guy found these drain plugs too, and after he drained them and the main drain plug he put exactly 7.5 gallons back in. I guess its better to have too much oil on hand as apposed to too little :)
