Howdy, just installed an 18" shutter mounted exhaust fan in my barn for getting rid of welding fumes. I got the fan from GlobalIndustrial.com - Material Handling Equipment|Workbenches|Furniture|Tools|Motors|HVAC .... after I ordered it I relized that I should have gone with the 16" so I would not have to do so much wacking on my barn... Here are some pictures of the install. I boxed it in and put a hinged door on the inside with a limit switch that turns the fan on only when the door is fully open. The door is to help keep the heat in during the winter.

...and a couple more pictures... The door is held closed by kitchen door type magnets.....

I like the idea, what was the total cost? Have thought about putting something like this in my work shed but with an added intake at the other end for some airflow in the spring. I'm sure someone already has this, but also with a thermostat that would open and close vents, and turn on the fan when needed.

The fan was $210 USD and the hinges were $9... I had all the wood, screws, etc. I had an old furnace blower I thought about using, and I could have used it and just bought a set of aluminum shutters. I have been wanting to something for years. Everytime I open up the doors of my 40X80' barn and see that big cloud of black smoke exit....... The winter is the worst....

It amazes me how expensive those vent fans are. I mean you can buy an industrial floor model for $50. Why are vent fans so darn expensive?

I looked around when I bought most places wanted around $280 plus shipping. They wanted about $90 for just the aluminum shutter assembly where I bought my fan from. That's just the going price for stuff still built in the U.S. of A. :)

woodlandfarms, I noticed that too, but they may not have near the same cfm, or something must be different, and JerryK, the aluminum shutter price is way to high wherever I've looked too. Had a whole house fan one time that pulled from the attic that was very effective, but when I moved and priced another it looked to high for me, now the shed, well that's another story.
