Yep - it is nice up in the mountians there. I like the Mt Washington for the peaks but one of my favorite places is the Balsams in Dixville Notch.

The golf course on the top of the mountian is great as well - see Maine, VT and Canada..

Its a bit of a hike to get there tho..

Take a ride on The Cog Railway if you're into steam, especially if the weather is clear up top.

+1 But I think ya got to go early in the AM for steam. I was saddened to see diesel/hyd loco's last year. The road is cool too, esp on a Harley!

I love that area and hike Mt. Washington (4.5 miles) every year with friends and family. I've never stayed at the Mt. Washington resort believe it or not but have heard it's amazing and dinner is a black tie only event. The Cog railroad is a fantastic ride and I prefer the steam to the diesel but anything's better than the coal train which covers you in black soot. :D
The golfing is great as well. The golf carts have GPS and LCD TV's that show you the hole your at, distance to the hole and current weather conditions.

Thanks for the replies,
I've been up to this area on short vacations for the last 4 years. The Mt Washington is a historic hotel that was designed for the wealthy. Today it is very casual, there still is a black tie only dining room but most of the rest of the place is very easy going. Not cheap but not snooty at all.

Have not gone on the cog train but have been to the station and have seen that black plume from miles away in past years, but not this year yet, they were still burning coal last year. Love that smell.

I have driven up the auto road, that's an adventure in itself, you can freeze your butt off in the summer up there sometimes.

Someone told me Mt Washington was one of the deadliest mountains in the world ?? I have not checked that on google though.

I have been to the Balsams last year. All these "notch" roads are incredible,
That Dixville notch road feels like your driving off a cliff when your driving north thru it, My daughter screamed and scared me more than the road dropping off.

Last night looking for moose, a cloud came in and settled in the crawford notch, couldn't see the road!!

It's the weather. Changes in a heartbeat and many do not prepare for it and pay dearly.

I was there maybe early nineties. First day we got there, foggy, nothing to see. Next morning, everything iced up, still foggy. So, we checked out the hiking club (forget the name), thought we would check out some of the trails. The weather broke and we joined up with several others to hike to the top.

I am tall and like to "power hike"on rough terrain so I had no problem clamoring up the talus but it beat my wife up pretty good so we thumbed a ride down. Lot of hot brakes!

Wind was blowing like 60 mph up at the weather station which is quite mild I understand. Highest recorded wind something like 231mph?

We left the next morning wearing T-necks and wool sweaters but were down to shorts by the time we hit CT.

PS, just remembered. That trip we had gone up to the Rangely Lakes area in Maine then went south along the Andrew Scoggins River into New Hampshire. Good time for sure!

Good Mornin JB,
Yep we went up there a couple of years back for a day trip from Lake Ossippe. I couldnt get over the views ! It seemed really strange looking down on the Wildcat ski area ! The day we went up, it was about 80 at the base, and freezing at the peak with 60 mph gusts ! :) We drove up, it was quite an experience ! ;)

I guess it's the most deadly in the U.S. 134 died there since the mid 1800's
I read it also has to do with it being fairly easily accessible to the less experienced.

Here's a video of a rally car going up, You can see at the end near the top how foggy it is. Seems to be a cloud magnet, often times the whole sky will be clear except right at the summit.

Hi Scotty,

Yeah for me it's the biggest mountain I've been on, once you get above the tree line it's like being on the moon :)

Out west they say you have to dig down to get to 6,000 ft

Oh yeah, of course I went all the way thru VT on 91, had to stop at Curtis's BBQ pit  in Putney. Not much to look at but good food.

I have not been to Mt. Wash., but I was in the immediate area at a ski resort I cannot even remember the name of several years back. My wife's cousin had her wedding there - quite an event compared to what I'm used to. Very beautiful area, quite different from ski areas here in N.C. - no moose warning signs here, just deer.

We stayed up at the MW Hotel about 10 years ago and it was quite grand, but went back this summer with visiting relatives and it was even nicer since Omni bought it out and rehab'd some of the grounds, very beautiful.

Cannon mountain is another super place to visit and hike, even w/o the old man of the mountain ;)

Just went to the other grand hotel named MountainView Hotel in Whitefield, it was very simular but just smaller, but a great place nonetheless.

If you love mountains, lakes, low(er) taxes and freedom, NH is the place to be!!
