JD 970 won't shift into gear

Your diagnosis is most likely a correct one... Have you tried adjusting the clutch? Tractor been sitting for a spell? How much "free play" is there in the pedal travel?

If you could get tractor in an open area. If clutch plate is stuck and you get it started "SAFELY" in gear with clutch pedal depressed and alternately stomp brake pedals the clutch might come unstuck.

I have a 970 and experienced the same problem. When the tractor sets up the clutch disc sticks to the flywheel and will not release. I took the side inspection cover off and spayed clutch with kroil and let it sit overnight. The next morning it was free, though sometimes you might need to put the tractor against a tree and start it.
