Tractor Supply Co. and other farm equipment places may have rubber belting used for hay rollers.

You could cut up an old tire sidewall, too, I suppose.

Not surprisingly, there are times when the plastic deflector hanging off the right side of the deck gets in the way. Some people remove the deflector, but I'm not fond of this idea for safety reasons (I'm guessing it keeps things like rocks and such from being flung high into the air).

Well, I think you're on the right track safety wise; but not for the primary reasons you suggest. The lawyers told the factory to put on a deflector as it gives a few extra inches of barrier before someone puts a foot into the discharge opening while the blades are moving.

I cut mine in half, and then I have a bungee for when I want it open completely. If I would take mine off completely, a good portion of the right blade tip is completely exposed, and that sucker is movin.

The concept of the pull rope is a great idea, and I'm gonna' do dat..
However I WILL leave the discharge deflector chute in place. If something can happen in will, even with best intentions. Read the chainsaw chaps thread =80..

Way back, my dad had a kid mowing his lawn at the country place and said kid (college city kid and a dance major), ended up chopping off a big toe with the mower. His error however was mowing downhill on a slope with a push mower. Slipped and stuck his foot under as he fell. Ouch!
