JD 4000 series vs 5000

I have been doing a little looking at new tractors and I don't understand why a basic 4520 or a 4320 is 9 to 10 thousand more then a 5045 or a 5055. Are the 5000 series tractors not built as well as the 4000 series? I get to looking and the 5055 seems like a lot of tractor for the money. It would serve my needs as well as a 4000 series if not better. I realize the frame is bigger on the 5000 but that wouldn't be an issue for me. What am I missing?

I think the 4x20 series is a "premium" line tractor with bells and whistles like ehydro or the power reverser tranny and other "comfort" features. The 5k series are workhorses without a doubt. I had a 5203 a few years back and it was unstopable. I considered a 5101 E Limited recently when I bought a 4720 cab. It was just too large for some of my applications. I would go 5k series for most farm apps...

I finally signed the Purchase Order for a new, cabbed 5075M this past week. I went back and forth for months on the question of 4000 vs 5000 tractors.

Really came down to the jobs at hand....

I want to run a small round baler (4'x5') and 10-bale accumulator and grapple for my small square baler.

I think the 4520-4720 have the Hp but I'm cautious about the long-term reliability of using those machines for more directed Ag work.

So, I spent a little more $$ up front and hopefully avoided having to spent alot later on to rebuild a tractor not well suited to the work required.

It's all the bells and whistles that make the 4000 series more expensive. Also, the intended market is a bit different and that market has a different price point. The 5000 series are a utility tractor whereas the 4000 series are a compact utility tractor (although large ones.)

My father just got a 5045E after looking at the larger 4000 series tractors. He was upgrading from a JD 4400 HST that was nothing but trouble for the last 1000hrs or so. Since it will be used strictly for farm work the 5045E ended up being a much better choice for less money. The only drawback was they wanted a hydrostatic trans, but it turns out the sync-shuttle on the 5045 works so smooth that it isn't much of an issue. The 5000 series are surprisingly heavily built for their size, all the components are made overseas (India and China, loader in Mexico) but these particular tractors have been out for quite a few years now with little trouble. I've put about 30hrs on it in the last couple weeks and I really like it, a very smooth operating, solid tractor.

I don't have much knowledge of the new 4000-series, but I think they are based on the older 4500-4700 chassis tractors. There is just too much electronics on the new 4000 series for my liking.

The difference is features and upgrades.

An example would be the 5065E base is 19,600
5065M base is 39,000
about $20,000 difference between an E and an M.

What are you planning to do with the tractor?

Are you comparing the most expensive 4000 machines with the least expensive 5000 machines?

You need to evaluate the machines as much as possible with similar configurations with the type of work in mind - IMO.

A "tricked out" cab 4520 vs a 5055E is not a real world apples vs apples - comparison.

If you are looking at the 4x20 series and ever think a CAB might be in your future then check the 5083E Limited. Prediscount pricing (depending on options) is in the ball park of 4320 and quite probably less than 4520 / 4720.

Depending on FEL options lift capacity is significantly greater than the 400CX versions.

I agree on looking at a 5083 is you are seriously considering a cab 4520 or 4720. That is what I intend to do in the future, and I currently have an open station 4320. I think they costs so much more than the 5000 series primarily due to the power reverser transmission and the fact that all gears within a range are synchronized.

The 5083E is alot of tractor for the money!! Seriously considered one.

Some of the differences between the cab 83E and the cab M series is air seat, wet clutch PTO, 16 or 32 speed PowerReverser vs 12 speed and more hydraulic options and higher flow rate.

The rear axles and axle housing and 3pt configuration on the M series is significantly heavier duty, too. About 750lbs worth!

I was thinking about a 4320 open station tractor but then I noticed a 5045E listed for around 15,000 and with front wheel assist it was I believe 21,000. Horse power on the 2 tractors are almost the same. I do mstly farm type work with them so the 5045 would be heavier and probably better suited for what I would be doing with it anyway. I don't quite have the wife convinced yet but I can see one in my future. I also found a 5055 with very low hours on it for around the same money.

Go for the 5000 series with FWA. You will not regret it.

A 5045E is MFWD and is also about 1400 lbs. heavier than a 4320 open station. More beef but less dough. Not as fancy though.
